12 paddlers (7 club members and 5 guest) paddled
the Black River in Sampson County, NC from Hwy 411
Clear Run bridge to Hwy 41 bridge, Section 2 in the
Paddlers Guide to E. NC. The distance was approximately 7
miles and water level at the Clear Run gauging station
was 5.74 meaning good water and no tree pullovers.
Hurricane Floyd flood damage was witnessed as evident in
the developed areas, the few mobile homes on the
river and damaged piers. Several paddlers stopped at
the high bluff with the mountain laurel and hiked
back in to see the mini water fall. Most wildlife seen
were ducks, hawks, and turkey buzzards, with deer
being heard running through the woods. Paddlers were
leader Don and Sandy Meece, Frank Dupin, Mary Martha
Vaught, Charles West, Terry Smith, Roger Gaby, Kathy
Aalps, Anna Marie Davis, Charles Keinan, Asa Beamer, and
Elizabeth Francis. The rains held off until after the trip
and it was a real nice easy going paddle.
