      DEATH PENALTY NEWS

      NEW REPORT: DEATH PENALTY WORLDWIDE

      On April 5, 2005, Amnesty International released its
      annual report on
      the death penalty worldwide. During 2004, more than
      3,797 people were
      executed in 25 countries and at least 7,395 were
      sentenced to death in
      64 countries. China, Iran, Viet Nam, and the United
      States again
      accounted for the vast majority of executions known to
      have taken place.

      While executions continued, the abolition of capital
      punishment
      advanced. Five countries abolished the death penalty
      for all crimes in 2004 -
      Bhutan, Greece, Samoa, Senegal and Turkey. At
      year-end, 120 countries
      had abolished the death penalty in law or practice.

      "at large" unpaid volunteer leadership positions for
      which a resident of
      any region may apply. The Program to Abolish the Death
      Penalty National
      Steering Committee (PADP-NSC) is composed of AIUSA
      members, staff and
      Board liaisons working together to develop and
      implement Program goals.
