I would be very grateful if any of your members could help me. I am enquiring about an old friend of many years, Bernard (Bernie) Bucan. Communication from Bernie ended abruptly a few years ago and when I "googled" his name I found that someone of that name was a member of your group but, sadly, died in May 2009. All the evidence indicates that it is the same person. If this is the case, I would be very grateful if anyone could let me know the circumstances of his death and anything else about him in the time just before this.

The Bernie I knew would have been about 70 in 2009. The last address I had for him was in Forest Gate. All the time I knew him he had little hair on his head but a substantial beard! We first met in 1971 when we were training to be lecturers in Further Education and we both followed careers in colleges . Bernie retired some years ago but I know he specialised in film studies. For a few years he worked in Middlesbrough, near to me in Newcastle. We still kept in touch when he moved to London and I visited him on occasions. I was pleased that he brought his partner, Peter, to stay with us when they first got together, and the last time we had a major contact was when he gave us the very sad news of Peter's passing.

Bernie attended my wedding in 1973 and was always interested in my son and his career, as he eventually became a lecturer in Film at Northumbria University.

Bernie was indeed a delightful man. He was completely non-competitive and I don't recall that he ever deliberately caused harm to anyone. If he has died, I am very sad but this I would really like to know if this is the case.

      Many thanks for your assistance.

      Peter Leggott
