      On the other hand when the Australian nun who is now called Blessed
      Mary McKillop was excommunicated it was done by the Bishop in her
      convent with all her community present and with the full ritual in
      the older Rituale Romanum. Bell, book and candle and all.
      In a sense, Brother Martin's excommunication was an exception to the
      norm.
      But then Brother Martin was an exception to the norm in many
      ways.<smile>

      The norm was the rather intimidating ritual in said book which was
      used rather more often than one would wish and was devastating to
      all.

      If you are in a position to obtain the older Rituale Romanum you
      will find the ritual, in Latin, and can peruse it yourself.
      Some older RC priests may still have it tucked away on their book
      shelves.
