FreeDV is indeed a pretty slick, patent-free digital voice solution and it's getting very solid now.  It's multi-platform running on Windows, Mac, and Linux and this "FreeDV" GUI running all the Codec2 backend stuff makes it pretty easy to use.  With that said, it's changing often and sometimes they break backward compatibility in favor to get things right before they set it to version 1.0.0. 

      I've personally looking forward to trying to use the backend FDMDV HF modem which gives us 1400 BAUD raw / 1100 BAUD with FEC using 14 QPSK carriers for data transport.  Anyway, you can learn a lot more on the technical sides of FreeDV, CODEC2, and the FDMDV technologies via this URL:

      I just found out on flexradio site that the software for digital voice is here. The software is free. Is it possible that FLDIGI could add the software to the already program of FLdigi? It is available for Linux and windows. The website is:
