      Just a quick heads up for those looking at using preupgrade or dvd upgrade (iso burn) from fc16 to fc17. I just been through the process on a Toshiba laptop

      And there a few foot traps along the way;

      On fc17 dvd upgrade,( the boot options for bios is dvd, hdd) - and the dvd boots but then it appears that it loses the  location of the cd rom drive

      You will see:

      ERROR: could not insert 'floppy': No such device

      try this workaround:

      - press tab to get to the kernel command line

      - replace "root=...." with "root=live:/dev/sr0"

      So the dvd drive is recognised properly.

      https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=827644

      See this webpage (The best on the subject);

      http://linuxfordummies.org/preupgrade-from-fedora-16-to-fedora-17-boots-to-old-fedora-16-kernel-issuefix/

      With PREUPGRADE the reboot is a fc17 release but using the latest fc16 kernel due to a grub2/grub.cfg write problem, where lines 39 through to 50

      (4 lines)

      Need to have fc16 changed to fc17.

      Then the repo issue that tries to update both fc16 and fc17 with yum update (see * below), also fc17 kernel needs to be installed,

      i.e :  yum install kernel*fc17*;

      1st) fix grub2 problem with loading wrong (older) f16 kernel during first boot, after preupgrade 2nd) run preupgrade again.

      what happens (as I understand it) some installation software read the version from the kernel, which was -- erroneously - set as f16 and messes up the whole repository configuration, which uses environmental variables to determine what to download.

      after first install with the error in kernel, you fix the kernel, and by running again preupgrade (which btw downloads nothing) straighten the thing somehow.

      if it still gives you trouble with the version of repos,

      vi /etc/yum/vars/releasever

      write: '17'

      yum repolist

      (NB I did this as just above to sort out the update issue and only fc17 as should be)

      should give you the right ones.

      now, if you issue:

      package-cleanup --orphans

      should give you all the older non-f17 packages "out-there"

      package-cleanup --dupes|grep f17|less

      unfortunately gives still TOO many f17 packages

      I'd consider getting rid of the orphans, although once the release is fixed yum update will clean out the fc16 versions in any case.

            Yes True Rich, My desktop PC had no issue, but the info/links are there for those that run into trouble. First time I have seen these issues with fedora, but FC17 looks v-good once there. I was adamant to keep my data and just upgrade from fc16 (not replace). The steps after upgrade of  installing the fc17 kernal, grub.cfg edit and release server stipulation for yum all came together nicely for the laptop, which does the ham stuff for me.

            Cheers

              This does not happen on all computers. On one of my computers I had to reload Fedora 17 from the beginning. It locked up the main program. So I had to go from scratch from the new aspect of loading as a new computer. you know, format and etc. Lost all of my information like bookmarks. I am fortunately that I have another computer with that same information...Whew!

              That sounds like the drive recognition issue if you were using a dvd burn etc, Did you have the “~could not load floppy” message when that happened?
