      It has been so for years. If anything it's dependent on settings in the
      machine's BIOS setup. Most (all?) ACPI-enabled systems allow the power
      button to power the system off either immediately or after 4 seconds.
      In the latter case, an ACPI event is fired off and sent to the O/S as
      soon as the button is initially pressed. The acpid daemon traps it and
      initiates a clean shutdown procedure.
