      Mr. Lau, et al.:

      Hardware: Inspiron 8000 Laptop
      Software: Mandrake 8.0 2.4.3 / 2.4.6
      My system is completed down now no thanks your advice, and it is my fault as
      I should never have installed a 2-day olde kernel upon anyone's
      recommendation.

      Firstly lets talk about what happened with the 2.4.6 kernel, it failed to
      create some sort of "initrd" file, and when my system was rebooted it never
      came back up, NOT EVEN IN FAILSAFE MODE. I am now forced to do a complete
      reinstallation to rectify this situation, let me tell you, I am really
      looking forward to that. I installed with a ReiserFS filesystem, and it took
      about an hour and half last time (I have a 32GB HD, and loaded many RPMs).

      Secondly, I am still re-asking the same question I asked before. Absent my
      desire to upgrade to a kernel of 2.4.5 or higher, why did the 2.4.3 kernel
      not compile correctly?
      I am now resigned to starting over my install of Mandrake, and will be
      working on that.

      I must admit, that a long time ago some suggested that I NEVER install a
      kernel that's not an RPM. I used to agree, recently I tried to patch the
      kernel (failed miserably), and also to use "tarred" not RPM format kernels
      for both RH and LM. It just doesn't work. No one really knows how to compile
      a kernel, I have been given 5 different sets of instructions, each with make
      commands in a different order!
      I give up, no more kernels that are not RPMs for me, as they just don't
      work, and the chance of really breaking a system is to risky as juxtaposed
      against the time to restore from such a disaster.
      One thing I have noticed about Linux is the terrible manner it takes to ever
      upgrade. Even with RH (a stable distribution in my opinion) doing an upgrade
      rarely works.

      Very Respectfully,

      I've had it turned off with no problems.

      Most of them really... :) All I have compiled in are:
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECS=m
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m

      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RZ1000=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEPCI=y
      CONFIG_IDEPCI_SHARE_IRQ=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PCI=y
      CONFIG_IDEDMA_PCI_AUTO=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
      CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y
      CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_MODES=y

      All others are unset.

      Sorry, I don't know anything about this as I don't have firewire
      devices.

      Aie... that looks strange. Have you tried grabbing the latest (2.4.6
      came out a day or two ago) and compiling thatone?

        Why not? 2.4.6 is a really good kernel.

        That is a problem of Mandrake. Why don't you use your old Mandrake
        kernel _and_ your new kernel simultaneously? If you do so, you can
        choose at the startup which to use.

        No Problem with Mandrake if you create a install floppy disk at the end
        of the installation process. With this disk you put only the disk and
        the CD in the computer. Then Mandrake do the complete installation
        process on it's own.

        The glibc rpm of Mandrake 8.0 is broken. You must install the updates.
        I had the same Problem on my desktop computer. With the new rpm I
        compiled kernels from 2.4.3 tp 2.4.6 without any Problems.
        Yesterday I compiled a 2.4.6 with debian for my Inspiron and it works
        perfectly.

        Bye, mad...

          years or so I have been doing system administration. But, I'll take
          your real use experiences at face value. I will work to get it
          working tonight.

          I did, I placed entries in the /etc/lilo.conf file to allow for my
          being able to boot from an older kernel. I also backuped up the
          modules directory, the source directory, the kernels, system maps,
          initrd.img files, etc. However, whatever the install of 2.4.6 did, it
          broke things to where the olde kernel did not come up.

          I have been running Linux for some time, and even though I keep olde
          kernels around (even when doing RPMed upgrades under RH, and I know
          how to use olde kernels to boot when stuck) for some reasons this
          time it broke something more severely.

          I didnt have a floppy handy when I did the install, so unfortunately
          I was not conservative enough to do this!

          The inspiron (8000 in my case) is an awesome computer. I am sure once
          I get mandrake 2.4.5 or higher going, I will be quite happy with it.
          Exactly which RPMs do you recommend my upgrading before attempting a
          new kernel upgrade?

          Is glibc dependent on anything else being upgraded to upgrade it?

          How can I use my install CD-ROMs in rescue mode to reload the kernel
          and try to get the system bootable again?

          I would imagine if I boot up in rescue mode from CD-ROM, I can reload
          the source and binary rpms for the kernel, recompile, and reinstall.
          Hopefully this will bring the machine into a more usefull state
          without a full installation of the entire Mandrake 8.0 again.

          Any suggestions before I start?

          By the way, what has your experience been with the "Mandrake-Freq"
          edition of Mandrake. Is it a relatively stable distribution with just
          more current RPMs on it? How does it compare as juxtaposed against
          the normnal Mandrake distribution?

          Thanks,

          STEVE:

          P.S. -- I was pretty mad before having watched by system get
          toasted, sorry if I came off a bit angry or abrupt. I just was so
          made that the system broke!

          Hopefully you will see this an accept my appology!

            First of all Stuart,
            You need to control yourself. Keep in mind this is a mailing
            list of Linux users volunteering to help other Linux users. I, and
            others, are under no obligation to help you... we do so in an effort to
            help other users solely - we aren't paid to put up with your kinda of
            bull-shit.
            I think the problem is not with your kernel, but rather with
            your impatience in trying to get it working.

            "No one really knows how to compile a kernel"
            Oh really? Is that why many of us on this list have compiled our own
            kernels without any difficulties? I compiled 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 2.4.4,
            2.4.5, and 2.4.6 without any difficulties. While I don't expect
            everyone to know how to compile a kernel, generally I try to help them,
            as do others on this list. Usually, once given enough time, they end up
            getting it right in the end. None of us ever said Linux was ready for
            prime-time yet, you have to give it time, and you can't just give up in
            desperation and come bitching back to us about it.

            You'll find you usually get more help by talking to us in
            friendlier tones, rather than just bitching and whining.

            cheers,
            steve

              Did lilo give any strange errours while running it? I actually took all
              the initrd references out, and don't even use it..
              What happens when the system boots up? Do you get "L-", "LI", "LIL-",
              or any other sequence of the LILO letters, or does it just do a
              hard-lock?

              You shouldn't need to get any other RPMs. The kernel is completely
              stand-a-lone, it shouldn't depend on anything else, so you should just
              be able to rpm -Uvh it on its own.

              > Is glibc dependent on anything else being upgraded to upgrade it?

              Not sure about this one...

              > How can I use my install CD-ROMs in rescue mode to reload the kernel

              Most distributions let you type "linux rescue" at the LILO prompt of the
              install CD to boot up a small live rescue system from which you can
              mount your hard drive, chroot it, and then fix LILO.

              I've only tried it a few times, but my experience was that it was
              relatively stable - but would have strange dependency issues. i.e.: if
              I installed a new RPM, it often caused a rippling chain of programs
              breaking. :) It's not bad as a test distribution to preview what's up
              and coming, but I would stay away from it as a stable distro for a
              desktop system.

              No prob...sorry I went off on you too... :) I wish I'd seen this email
              before replying in my annoyance. Anyhow, I think I took some of my
              aggression from re-installing Progeny Linux about 8 times today on my
              new I8K out on you too.

              cheers,

                It in fact hard-locked. It did not give any of the "normal" lilo
                errors you ask about above.

                I had been privy to a rumor about glibc causing something to break
                before posting the initial message, I wanted to see if anyone else
                know of that issue without me mentioning it first. As you can read in
                one of the other posts, indeed there is a bug reported with having to
                upgrade glibc prior to getting 2.4.6 to work with Mandrake 8.0

                Though in general, and with regard to the average of installation
                distributions I am sure you are correct.

                This I knew about, what I wasnt sure of was to what degree and in what
                manner must I work to repeal the residue of the 2.4.6 kernel. I
                eventually (about 20 minutes of work) managed to get it back up and
                running absent the need for a complete Mandrake reinstall.

                One thing I would love to see would be when we all have DVD writers
                and can download and burn DVD images of Linux which would eliminate
                these CD-ROM swaps. If I had a DVD image of Mandrake 8.0, and an
                install startup boot disk (I learned how to make them recently with
                LM8), a reinstall could be done over a lunch break with little care on
                my part.

                Fair enough. I was hoping to pull down the RPM Of 2.4.5 from it, but
                now that I know what I need to do to get 2.4.6 going from a tar.bz2
                file, I am leaning in the direction to do that instead.

                Not to say I am glad to here of your bad fortune, but I am sure you
                can appreciate the idea of knowing you just "stepped into" the need
                for a new install, or at least thinking you had been directed there.

                If I ever get made or frusterated, dont (anyone not just you) take it
                personally. I just hate to see hours of work get piddled away. I am

                  1) one person recommended "make disclean", I can find no documentaiton
                  on this, what does it do?

                  When doing a recompile of the kernel I now:

                  a) move the .config up one directory level
                  b) make mrproper
                  c) move the .config back into the linux source directory
                  d) make xconfig
                  e) make dep clean
                  f) make kernel bzImage install
                  g) make modules modules_install
                  h) lilo

                  1) Can step "f" and "g" be done in seperate windows (presuming a dual
                  processor machine, I dont have one as yet, but am thinking of an
                  athalon dual soon) concurrently without major harm?

                  2) How does one determine when modifications to the ".config" file are
                  only requisite of a "make modules modules_install" or a "make kernel
                  bzImage install", or both?

                  3) what make parameters imply others, i.e.:
                  a) would make install, force a make kernel and make bzImage if not
                  already done?
                  b) would make bzImage imply make kernel bzImage?
                  b) would make modules_install force a make modules if not already
                  done?

                    Hrm...strange, I wonder if LILO actually wrote anything to the boot
                    sector. If you get your system back up, see what kind of debugging
                    output you get running 'lilo -v -v' (the more -v there are, the more
                    debugging output you get). see if it's actually writing anything..

                    I know with Progeny, updating to the latest glibc causes debugging C++
                    programs to not work.. this shouldn't be a problem to a casual user,
                    but to a developer - it's a pretty serious oversight on Progeny's part.
                    I don't know if this is particular only to Progeny's packaging of glibc,
                    or if it's applicable to others as well.

                    I know if I had a DVD writer...I would be burning things other than DVD
                    images of Linux... <grin> In all seriousness though, I've never had to
                    use more than the 1st CD or Red Hat 7.1 or Progeny 1.0, and since I can
                    boot off the CD, I don't have to do any swaps... I think the only distro
                    I've had to swap CDs on was SuSE and it's crazy 7 CD install.

                    I would recommend that too... I'd be wary of pulling any RPM off a
                    freq/beta/cooker/whatever test distro to put into a stable system.

                    Yeah.. I actually had it installed and working on the 2nd try (damn
                    PCMCIA locked up the first install <g>). But I figured I would
                    experiment and get some useful experience with Debian, so I kept
                    renuking it and trying different installations and updates/upgrades. I
                    got tired around the 7th try, but then I screwed that one up and ended
                    up having to do the 8th one.
                    I agree though, it can definitely be frustrating to have that feeling of
                    wasted-hours...

                      Do you mean "make distclean"? There are two make targets to clean an
                      entire source tree of any prior compilation objects: "make distclean"
                      and "make mrproper" They basically go through and pretty much make it a
                      fresh start, i.e.: no compilation objects, no residual makefiles, no
                      dependencies either... pretty much like you just untarred the original
                      tarball.

                      Yup, I usually do them sequentially since I'm on a uni-processor
                      machine. But there's no harm...at worst, it'll slow down a little bit -
                      but there shouldn't be any harm.

                      Hrm...well, if it doesn't require a kernel rebuild, then doing a "make
                      kernel bzImage install" will only take about 5 seconds to run through
                      and realise it doesn't need to do anything. Likewise for the modules..

                      I've never done it...but I would think so... looking at the Makefile, the
                      install target is dependent on the kernel having been built....so it
                      would then call the make bzImage

                      > b) would make bzImage imply make kernel bzImage?

                      I think so...cause I've never done "make kernel bzImage", I only do
                      "make bzImage"
