I've recently installed debian sarge 2.4.27 on my Dell 8600 laptop.
My goal for the laptop is to use it as a file server / web server. I
don't have any intention of running graphic apps (KDE/gnome).
After the debian install, I've been using the laptop without any major
issue, but I did notice that the screen would never actually turn off.
That is, the display would blank but the backlight never turns off.
I'm concerned about screen life, so I've been attempting to get APM
working but I haven't had any luck.
I installed the debian 2.4.27 source package and I've enabled what
looks like the necessary APM options in my .config (CONFIG_APM=y,
CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK=y). I've been able to compile and reboot
with the custom kernel. In addition, I've installed the i8kutils package.
After doing that, APM doesn't appear to be working. For example, the
'apm' command always reports "No APM support in kernel".
(1) Can anyone give any insight as to what steps I need to take to get
the screen to power off?
(2) Does anyone have this working on a different flavor of linux?
