This one's got me stumped. I've googled and rtfm'ed off and on for
several days. I'm *sure* I'm not the first to encounter this, but I
can't work out a google query that separates this issue from others...

The symptoms started at a higher level, but I've reduced it as best I
      can to this:

      This is a Dell Inspiron 7500 with a Dell-labeled 3Com Cyclone CardBus
      ethernet card.

The ethernet card is recognized and works fine using the 3c59x driver
under stock RPM kernel 2.4.20 and an updated RedHat Linux 9.0.

Now I'm compiling kernel 2.6.5. It compiles, loads, and runs (with a few
things remaining to be smoothed out). The major issue at this point is
that it fails to recognize the ethernet card.

      Both modules.conf (2.4.20) and modprobe.conf (2.6.5) contain the line

      alias eth0 3c59x

A version of the driver exists in both module trees:

      $ locate 3c59x
      ... (src tree stuff)
      /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o
      /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.ko

Under 2.4.20, an invocation of kudzu shows this (note the 'NOTE' on the
      right):

$ kudzu --probe | grep desc
      desc: "Intel Corp.|440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI"
      desc: "USB UHCI Root Hub"
      desc: "3Com Corporation|3CCFE575CT Cyclone CardBus" <<==NOTE
      desc: "ESS Technology|ES1978 Maestro 2E"
      desc: "TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-U624"

      desc: "ATI|Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x"

      desc: "TOSHIBA MK6021GAS"

      desc: "Texas Instruments|PCI1225"
      desc: "Texas Instruments|PCI1225"

Under 2.6.5 the same command line shows this:

      desc: "Intel Corp.|440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI"
      desc: "Generic PS/2 Wheel Mouse"
      desc: "ESS Technology|ES1978 Maestro 2E"
      desc: "TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-U624"
      desc: "Lucent Microelectronics|WinModem 56k"
      desc: "ATI|Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x"
      desc: "3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive"
      desc: "TOSHIBA MK6021GAS"
      desc: "Intel Corp.|82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB"
      desc: "Texas Instruments|PCI1225"
      desc: "Texas Instruments|PCI1225"

No reference to the 3Com card. (And, yes, I know that 2.6.5 is also
missing the USB hub. That's my next challenge.)

As I said, I've done a lot of reading, re-booting, and testing in the
last several days. I've got more info at hand, but I *think* it is all
derivative of the bare facts I have presented here.

By far, the most helpful web resource I've found is:
      http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html

But sadly, while that page helped me trace the problem closer to the
source, my sleuthing has dead-ended and so now I turn to you folks in my
      hour of need.

What's the next test/technique to isolate the problem? and/or How do I
get this card to be recognized under 2.6.5.

      TIA
      David
