Try with XFree 4.3 . It works for me in an I8600 WUVGA with ATI 9000.

I have an 8600 with ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 and it did not detect it
at all - was wondering if I tried other ATI laptop drivers...?

Btw - anyone know where I can get the 'specs' on the Dell 8600 UXGA
screen? (ie: refresh H/V rates etc)

          Thanks,
          Dan

            Dan,

Google for 'inspiron 8600 linux' or even 'inspiron 8500 linux' and take a look at the results.

Most people who have done it succesfully have posted the relevant sections of there xf86 config files for this machine....

              I have got:

              # lspci
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 Lf [Radeon Mobility 9000 M9] (rev 01)

in an i8600 with a Debian-Serge runing on it. With the
XFree 4.2.1-12.1 X does not run. So, I try succesfully with
XFree 4.3.0-0pre1v4. (only DRI does not work)

              In /var/log/Xfree86.0.log I read:

It does not appear 9600 :-( but you can try.

With driver ATI, I do not need any modelines and

              Modes "1920x1200" "1280x1024" "1280x800" "960x600" "480x300"

              works well. Only 1650x1050 fails
