      Hi

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8000 notebook
with NVIDIA GeForce 2 Go AGP (BIOS V. 3.11.01.13.08)OnBoard Mem 32 MB
Win2K preinstalled, Resolution 1600x1200, True Color 32 Bit.

      I successfully installed SuSE 7.3.

      I successfully installed
      NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.suse73.i386.rpm
      NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.suse73.i386.rpm

The Xserver is starting but just with (default?) resolution 800*600.

How can I impress my Xserver to use 1600*1200 instead?

Here foloow extracts from my XF86Config (I copied it mainly from
      several postings here):

why is NVIDIA not using the desired resolution?

Well Dell gives no support for Linux and Nvidia is not replying!

      Any hints very much appreciated!!!

      best regards

As the log said, it can't find a resolution called "1600*1200" - because
your syntax is wrong. "800x600" works because it's got an x instead of a
        star. Replace "1600*1200" with "1600x1200." It'll work.

If you will allow me to poke fun, it's a bit embarrassing that you couldn't
figure this out yourself. The answer is all in the stuff you posted.

First, look at the format of the resolution string in the modelines in your
          Monitor section:

          >Section "Monitor"
          > Identifier "Monitor0"
          > VendorName "Dell"
          >...
          > #Modeline "1400x1050" 110 1400 1400 1648 1776 1050 1050 1053
          >1067
          > #Modeline "1400x1050" 114.41 1400 1416 1704 1944 1050 1050 1060
          >1097
          > DisplaySize 305 230
          >EndSection

OK, now look at the formst of the strings in the modelines that YOU added:

          >Section "Screen"
          > Identifier "screen1"
          > Device "NV AGP"
          > Monitor "Monitor0"
          > DefaultColorDepth 24
          > #SubSection "Display"
          > # Depth 32
          > # Modes "1600*1200" "1280*1024" "1024*768" "800x600"
          > # ViewPort 0 0
          > #EndSubSection
          > SubSection "Display"
          > Depth 24
          > Modes "1600*1200" "1280*1024" "1024*768" "800x600"
          > ViewPort 0 0
          > EndSubSection
          >EndSection

Notice the difference? Do you see that the "800" string is different from
all the others? If not, then finally take a look at the error messages that
          XFree86 plopped in the log:

          >(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (bad mode
          >clock/interlace/doublescan)
          >(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1600*1200" (no mode of this name)
          >(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1280*1024" (no mode of this name)
          >(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1024*768" (no mode of this name)
          >(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for Display Device 0:
          >(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "800x600": 56.3 MHz, 53.7 kHz, 85.1
          >Hz
          >
          >why is NVIDIA not using the desired resolution?

Because you haven't asked for it properly. In XFree86, the width and height
in the resolution strings are always separated with the "x" character, not
the "*" character. Change your "Device" section to this:

          Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"

and you should achieve success. This is a standard all throughout X. To
specify the size of an xterm window, you use this, for example:

          xterm -geometry 80x50
