all software/kernel that is optimised for i386 should run without any
problems on any of the processors (amd/cyrix/intel)

But it's the ones that use any of specialised features/instructions that
are found in the newer models that case problems

      [kingsly@utopia kingsly]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
model name : Pentium III (Coppermine)
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov
      pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse
      [kingsly@utopia kingsly]$
(irrelevant lines snipped out from output)

if you check the output on your AMD processor .. you might find some of
the stuff missing... so if the proggie uses those features ... then it
      might fail.

Eg. some of the DivX;-) plug-ins work only on Intel Machines.

Please note that while Athlon processors constantly provide more value for
money, as far as standard compilation goes, when an optimized code is run
Pentium4 beats the Athlon almost always.

If you are using your computer for video conversions etc (like Divx etc)
then Pentium4 with SSE2 optimized applications are safe bet.

If you just want another computer, athlon indeed offers best bang for buck.

          dear buddy,
thanks for replying and telling me some good facts.i
wanted to know this as i want to run few simulator
programs for embedded systems.as the programming deals
with bits by bits. athlon might not support this.and
recently when i went to windriver stall to it.com,i
did not found athlon's name in the hardware supported
by their VxWorks software.but that is supported by
most of other known processors as powerpc, pentium
etc..and on enquirinf i did not got some satisfiying
answer.people standing at the stall did not knew that.

as later i will try for some pirated versions of few
of them, i want to know what would be the best deal
for me.a pentium or a athlon.
if u have any suggestion please let me know.
