is the easiest way to protect data file from unwanted access, encryption is
good but a bit trickier.

Carl might reset the file attributes, when he overwrites the file, so
you would need to apply the changes after each time the file is saved.
If you want to secure the file, you would better encrypt the data before
it is written to the file.
Sure you need to decrypt it when reading too.
