      the following is a fowarded message from the LCS. I am sure we all want to join in wishing Alan White  all the strength and support he needs.

      Mike

      Dear LCS Member

      Alan White (LCS Secretary) has been suffering most of the year from a stomach problem which has been extremely difficult to diagnose and has been attacking his general health.

      He has now been taken into a local hospital for further tests and will subsequently be moved to a specialist centre for an operation. The following message from Myra explains things further:

      =========================================================
      Alan has been taken into the QE2 Hospital [Welwyn Garden City] for more tests ... At last something is happening ... He has been fortunate, in the hospital, to be in a bed next to Roger in his geology goup which has been an important factor in cheering him up.

      I do not know whether you know that the cancer he has - pseudomyxoma peritonei - starts in the appendix and does not spread outside the abdomen; but within the abdomen it gets everywhere and the cure is to cut out all the organs you do not need much plus the bits that are affected.  The scans are not indicating that the organs are affected but he is having a laproscopy [this] week so that the consultant can have a closer look and take tissue samples for biopsy. There are only two UK centres for treating the cancer and the consultant is liaising with colleagues in Basingstoke to get him a place.  We are pleased with this as it will be so much closer for the family to visit.

      I would like to thank everyone who has sent him good wishes.  We have all been knocked back by the speed of his illness and you have all helped Alan to keep sane and cheerful and encouraged all of us to keep positive.

      Myra

      I know some of you will want to drop him a note - which you should probably send to his home: 69 Cromwell Road, Hertford, Herts, SG13 7DP.

      I suggest that you refrain from sending emails to him for a while and that any LCS matters which would normally require his attention should come to me. As soon as I hear any further news, I will let you know and when he is back "on line" we'll send out a note.

    Your message has been successfully submitted and would be delivered to recipients shortly.
