      newsletter - Canadiens Nation

      We’re in

Two more games left on the regular season calendar and the Canadiens’ 2012-13 playoff march begins. The past becomes history, the dials are reset to zero and everything makes the jump to the next level.

While the current Canadiens are made up of more than a few young players who will get their first taste of NHL playoff action in a few days’ time, the team is also composed of a handful of veterans who hold their share of postseason experience – and in some cases have even gone all the way. Among them is Habs captain, Brian Gionta, who has not only suited up for 93 career playoffs games, but also won the Stanley Cup as a member of the New Jersey Devils in 2002-03. Joining him at the champions table are Travis Moen, Michael Ryder, Tomas Kaberle and Davis Drewiske, all of whom have seen their names engraved on hockey’s greatest prize.

Complementing the team’s resident Cup champs are another group of players who all have significant playoff experience while wearing a Habs jersey. Andrei Markov (49), Tomas Plekanec (47), Josh Gorges (46), Carey Price (26) and P.K. Subban (21) have all compiled impressive playoff credentials while sporting the bleu-blanc-rouge. Francis Bouillon also makes his way onto that list with 41 postseason tilts of his own, split between the Canadiens and the Nashville Predators.

Behind the bench, the Habs have Michel Therrien bringing 37 games worth of playoff coaching experience to the table, 12 of them stemming from the Canadiens’ run in 2001-02. Following his time in Montreal, Therrien went on to lead the 2007-08 Penguins all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, ultimately seeing their run end in Game 6 of that series.

Looking back into the team’s history, since its first NHL season in 1917-18, the Canadiens have missed the playoffs only 15 out of a 94 possible times. In other words, the Habs have given themselves a shot at the Cup an astounding 84% of the time. In the many instances in which they took part in the second season since their founding in 1909, the Canadiens managed to win the Stanley Cup 30% of the time, for a grand total of 24 Cups throughout the club’s storied history.

Now, at the end of a shortened season in which they’ve already shattered the expectations and predictions of analysts from around the hockey world, the Habs look to start the playoffs the same way they started their season – with a team-first attitude taking center stage.

If you want to see your favorite Canadiens player front and center on the cover of EA’s latest NHL game, now’s the time to vote and make it happen. Don’t forget, on Thursday all votes cast on Twitter count for double, so add #NHL14Subban or #NHL14Desharnais to your tweets! You can also vote the more “traditional” way right here.
