      Going Camping

For many, summer is a time of relaxation and outdoor activities. BBQ’s, block parties and swimming pools fill the agenda as people look for ways to enjoy, and sometimes escape, the summer weather. But every July, the Washington Capitals offer yet another way to beat the heat while also getting a chance to see the future of the Capitals organization. The Capitals Rookie Development Camp opened up on Monday, July 11 and will run until Saturday, July 16. Several of the organization’s top prospects, recent draft picks and other select rookies take part in the week-long camp which is followed by the annual Capitals Fan Fest.

Capitals development camp is designed to help Capitals prospects improve their games and allow the Capitals to evaluate their progress. This is the fifth straight year that the camp is being held at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions, including the three intrasquad games, are free and open to the public.

Two players who attended last summer’s development camp ended up playing for the Capitals in 2010-11. Marcus Johansson (69 regular-season games and all nine playoff games) and Braden Holtby (14 regular-season games) both saw significant time at the NHL level. Those two and six others –Zach Miskovic, Cody Eakin, Joe Finley, Garrett Mitchell, Dmitri Orlov, Trevor Bruess and Dmitry Kugryshev – appeared in games for the Hershey Bears of the AHL. Three players - Brett Flemming, Stanislav Galiev and Eakin – participated in the Memorial Cup championship.

The Capitals Rookie Development Camp is an excellent opportunity to enjoy some mid-summer hockey while avoiding the sweltering heat and getting an early chance to see the Caps of the future. Don’t forget to attend the 2011 Capitals Fan Fest, a free-to-the-public celebration that features the team’s annual equipment sale, interactive games, autographs and public skating on Saturday, July 16.
