Forward Darren Reid Loaned from Hershey Bears to Reading

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed forward Jim Gehring [“GAIR ihng”]. In another transaction announced today, the Hershey Bears have loaned forward Darren Reid [“REED”] to the Royals. In other transactions previously completed: (i) goaltender Andrew Engelage has been recalled to the Marlies; (ii) defenseman Rob Kwiet has been recalled to the Providence Bruins; (iii) forward Gavin Morgan has been loaned to the San Antonio Rampage; and (iv) goaltender Shane Davis has been signed as the team’s emergency back-up goaltender.

Gehring (5’11/185) (26), a first year pro from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, spent the last three seasons at West Chester University where he earned back-to-back Player of the Year honors in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. In 96 total regular season games at West Chester, Gehring racked up 272 points (150g-122a) and led his team to back-to-back regular season and playoff championships in his final two seasons with the Golden Rams. Reid (6’2/205) (26), a sixth year pro from Lac La Riche, Alberta, has six goals and two assists (eight points) and twenty penalty minutes in twenty-one games with the Bears this year. Reid, an eighth round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, has played twenty-one National Hockey League games with Tampa Bay and the Philadelphia Flyers.

This marks the third time that Engelage has been recalled from the Royals to the Marlies. In five games with Reading, Engelage has compiled a record of 4-1-0-0 with a 3.32 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. For Morgan, this is his fourth trip to the AHL this season. The prior three call-ups were to the Hershey Bears. In twenty games with Reading this year, Morgan has scored two goals, assisted on thirteen others (fifteen points) and picked up thirty penalty minutes. Shane Davis (5’11/170) (22), a first year pro from Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania, served as the Royals EBG on November 28, 2009 in Reading’s 6-3 loss to the Johnstown Chiefs.

The Royals are back in action tonight (Saturday, January 2, 2010 @ 7:35 pm) when the team travels to First Arena in Elmira, New York to take on the Elmira Jackals. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 7:05 pm.
