RAMPAGE STUN WOLVES IN SHOOTOUT, 3-2
- RAMPAGE STUN WOLVES IN SHOOTOUT, 3-2
Forwards Jason Krog, Joe Motzko, Schultz and Kevin Doell all missed on their attempts in the shootout as they could not solve Rampage netminder Al Montoya.
Defenseman Brian Bell and center Mike Zigomanis were able to beat Wolves goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who backstopped a shootout for the first time in his professional career. It was the first shootout loss for the Wolves this season and first time they have been pushed to one since Nov. 11.
Chicago (41-13-2-1) has not lost in regulation in their last 12 outings, leads the West Division and Western Conference with 85 points and ranks second in the American Hockey League with 41 wins.
The Wolves grabbed a 2-1 third period lead when Schultz banged home a rebound into an empty net past Montoya while on the power play at 10:31 of the final frame, but San Antonio (32-17-3-7) knotted the score at two with five minutes remaining in regulation when Zigomanis flicked a wrister from the slot that beat Pavelec glove side for his second tally of the night at 15:00.
Pavelec (24-9-1) saved 40 of 42 shots as he lost for the first time in five starts.
Chicago opened up the scoring at 5:44 of the initial frame while shorthanded. Joey Crabb stripped the puck from a Rampage defender at the blue line and pushed it to Staurt who corralled the puck and walked in on Montoya and snapped a shot over his blocker. Montoya (17-8-3) stopped 22 of 24 shots.
The Rampage tied the score at one when Zigomanis' shot from the slot found the back of the net at 6:23 of the middle frame.
The Wolves start a four-game home streak against the Milwaukee Admirals at the Allstate Arena tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
