New letterbox: Pro Deo Et Patria-For God and Country
      Norwich, New London, CT

      Clues:
Recently I was sharing some historical letterboxes I found with my father. He informed me that we have a Vice President of The United States in our family tree. I was shocked, I would have thought someone would have mentioned that a long time ago. After doing some research, I found that Lafayette Sabine Foster was indeed a Vice President. He actually took Andrew Johnson's place when he became President after Abraham Lincoln's assassination. His list of his accomplishments goes on and on including Mayor of Norwich Connecticut, a member of the State House of Representatives, Speaker of the House and was a judge in the CT Supreme Court from 1870-1876. In 1880 Foster died of malaria and willed his personal library to the town of Norwich and his residence for the use of Norwich Free Academy. He is buried at Yantic cemetery where you will find his "gavel."

Find Yantic Cemetery off Lafayette street in Norwich CT. After entering through the black iron gates, turn immediately left and then right by "King." Go around the rotary passing what looks like a white and then brown church steeple on your left. When you reach the opposite side of the rotary take a right by Robinson. Continue till you see Lafayette S. Foster on your right at the end of the drive. On his stone you will read "Pro Deo Et Patria" which is Latin for "For God and Country." Walk to the back of his stone and you will read the nicest saying i have ever read on a stone. It says " A PATRIOTIC CITZEN, A WISE COUNSELOR, AN ELOQUENT ADVOCATE, A LEARNED AND INCORRUPTIBLE JUDGE, EMINENT AND HONORED IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES, IN ALL HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY AND TO MANKIND HE COUNTED NO DIGNITY SO HIGH AS THAT OF A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST, NO POSSESSION SO DEAR AS THE FAVOR OF GOD. From Foster's stone take a reading of 360 degrees and find E. A. Bill's tall "stump." From Bill's stump take a reading of 350 degrees to a large tree on the edge of the embankment. Be careful w small children as it is a steep drop down to the water. Nestled behind this tree under some leaves and Rocks will be Judge Lafayette's Gavel. Please rehide well, this stamp means a lot to me.

        Clues:
Town's End Preserve is across the street from Beebe Pond, use Beebe Pond parking area and walk across the street. Look for the gate that says "Public Welcome." You need to locate the bench and sit a while and enjoy the scenic view. Then look to your left as you sit on the bench - see the hill of boulders? Wyatt, DSA is a dog scout and he likes to hike and climb, run, jump and swim. He climbed on top of the boulders and hid his letter box behind the top boulder in a cave. This is not a high climb but be careful!! You can take the box and stamp in as you sit on the bench. Please insert the box securely back in its hiding place and make sure everything is in the plastic bag so it stays dry. Enjoy this short but scenic hike on this hidden preserve. The trees are marked with identifying tags so you can learn what types grow here. We saw a bunny, raccoon and squirrel as we hiked! We loved it here.

Wyatt planted this box as a requirement for his Dog Scout Letterbox Dog Title. He has learned to behave on the trail and not chase wildlife. He comes when he is called and has been obedience trained through positive reinforcement training. To learn more about Dog Scouts visit dogscouts.org.
