      Mr. Mark Faith has listed a Tolkien holograph letter, dated Jan. 5, 1961, on eBay, at: 


      A substantial excerpt from this letter was published by Humphrey Carpenter as Letter 227 in _The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien_ (cf. p. 303). 

      Of particular interest to this list is the etymology given therein of the Quenya name _Númenor, Númenórë_. The reproduced first page of the letter allows us to correct a couple of misreadings in this etymology as published, which should read:

      “Númenor, shortened form of _Númenórë_, is my own invention, compounded from _nūme-n_ “going down” (√ndū, nū), sunset, West, and _nōre_ “land, country” = _Westernesse_.”
