      LEGISLATIVE RESEARCHER/LEGISLATIVE ADVOCATE

      The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, a statewide,
      progressive, activist labor organization is looking for
      a dynamic individual to be our Legislative Researcher-
      Legislative Advocate. The environment is fast-paced and
      high pressure as we create economic change in the largest,
      most dynamic state in the country.

      The Legislative Researcher-Legislative Advocate's
      responsibilities will include research projects in the
      Legislative and Political arenas; researching and writing
      policy reports in support of or in opposition to state
      legislation; representing the CLF in meetings with state
      elected and administrative officials and their staffs;
      coordinating and presenting testimony before lawmaking and
      regulatory bodies; and designing curricula for activist
      workshops and training seminars. The Legislative Researcher-
      Legislative Advocate provides research support to the
      Political and Legislative departments.

      Requirements include:

      - Bachelor's degree in economics, political science or
      related field

      - Minimum of five years experience in policy analysis,
      research or legislative advocacy. Familiarity with
      organized labor, state government and legislative and
      policy processes is highly desirable.

      - Excellent communications skills, including ability to
      communicate technical information to audiences both in
      writing and through public speaking

      - Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including
      familiarity with spreadsheets, demographic data, and
      basic statistical analysis

      - Word processing and office organizational aptitude

      - Ability to present research and concrete recommendations
      in popular, understandable language

      - Ability to synthesize academic research on policy
      proposals as well as to identify and to prepare expert
      witnesses to testify on such proposals

      - Self motivation, ability to work independently, ability
      to prioritize tasks

      - Willingness to work as a part of a team

      - Experience with presentation software (e.g. Microsoft
      Power Point) and page layout programs (e.g. Quark Xpress)
      is highly desired.

      - Commitment to goals of the California Labor Federation,
      AFL-CIO

      The Legislative Researcher-Legislative Advocate reports to
      the Chief of Staff and works closely with the legislative
      staff. This full time position will be based in Sacramento,
      California with some travel required. The successful
      candidate will be required to register as a lobbyist with
      the State of California. Salary based on experience and
      will include health and dental benefits. Applications

      PUBLIC POLICY DIRECTOR

      The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, a statewide
      progressive labor organization, seeks a Public Policy
      Director. The Federation is building the organizational
      capacity to implement progressive economic reforms in
      California and welcomes inquiries from candidates who
      thrive in fast-paced and high pressure environments.

      We require a leader ready to address issues of economic
      justice and economic development in the nation's most
      populous and most dynamic state. The Public Policy Director
      will be responsible for strategic development of the
      Federation's research program in support of Labor's
      electoral and legislative objectives and the development of
      public policy initiatives. The Director will join officers
      and senior staff to help set priorities for research projects
      in the legislative, political and economic arenas and will
      present findings to union activists and governmental bodies.

      Requirements include:

      - Master's degree in economics, political science or public
      policy;

      - Minimum of five years experience in strategic research for
      activist organizations: familiarity with California state
      government and legislative processes is highly desirable;

      - Excellent quantitative, analytical and communications
      skills, including ability to communicate technical
      information to diverse audiences;

      - Attainment of professional stature sufficient to
      adequately serve as Federation spokesperson to academic
      and public policy community;

      - Demonstrated managerial skills in developing staff and
      defining organizational objectives: supervisory experience
      preferred;

      - Proficiency with basic business software (e.g. Microsoft
      Office);

      Responsibilities include:

      - Writing policy papers on broad range of policy issues
      affecting working people;

      - Synthesizing existing academic and advocate research on
      Federation's policy proposals;

      - Advising executive officer on policy positions for labor;

      - Developing and implementing research proposals in support
      of political and legislative agendas;

      - Consulting senior Federation officers and representatives
      of union affiliates in planning long range policy objectives;

      - Organizing conferences in coordination with Federation
      staff to build momentum on major policy initiatives;

      - Guiding capital strategies efforts;

      - Working with academic institutions, labor centers, think
      tanks, and other policy advocacy groups to plan and
      implements research projects;

      - Identifying coalition allies and opponents of policy
      initiatives and assemble relevant supporting research;

      - Designing and evaluating political candidate questionnaires;
      advising candidate endorsement process; monitoring elected
      official performance;

      - Assisting Federation staff in identifying and capitalizing
      upon political and demographic trends throughout California;

      Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Public Policy Director
      will work closely with senior Federation personnel in
      integrating research activities into the organization's
      broader mission. This full time position will be based in
      San Francisco with some travel required. Salary based on
      experience and will include excellent health, dental and
