WBAI needs emergency funds to keep Empire State transmitter
- *** PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY ****
WBAI/Pacifica Radio is in critical condition and, if at any point in the past 53 years you called 99.5 FM "home," we're asking you to help, right now.
The station is in debt to the Empire State Building to the tune of $250,000, representing overdue rent. The landlord seeks both payment and to break the lease and expel the station's broadcast transmitter. Without a transmitter, our radio dies.
In spite of our deep dissatisfaction with the lack of process and other rights violations at WBAI, and questions about how and why conditions could have been allowed to reach this point, we lend our voice to the call for contributions that are as generous as you can afford.
In the coming days, we will provide more background information, plans to prevent a recurrence, and other ways you can become involved.
We thank former board member Nia Bediako for helping to arrange for the move to low cost temporary studios at City College in Harlem and for forcing the issue of the transmitter lawsuit and the one by our former Wall Street landlord into public discussion. We are also grateful to Mimi Rosenberg for having gotten the station qualified and free legal representation.
