Shape Note Workshop in Loma Linda
- Shape Note Workshop in Loma Linda
Category: American folk music traditions
Time: Sunday (April 10) 1-4 p.m.
(driving directions below)
Amateur a capella singers may be interested to learn of a special singing
school to be held this Sunday, April 10, led by alto Karen Willard of Seattle,
Shape note music is a traditional form of American a capella sight-singing,
usually from the _Sacred Harp_ (first published 1844, conservatively updated
1991), intended for singing only. I.e. it is never preformed for audiences;
everybody sings, and everyone has a chance to call out afavorite song.
Shape note is particularly recommended for "altoes with an attitude" because
some of the alto lines are more musically interesting than what is usually on
offer. Also, altoes are allowed to sing as loud as they want (there is no
audience, remember -- we're just singing for ourselves). Karen Willard is a
well-known alto in this tradition.
This workshop is oriented towards first-time singers.
