      >RALLY AND PRESS CONFERENCE
      >THURSDAY JUNE 8, 10AM
      >SAN FRANCISCO PLANNING DEPARTMENT
      >1660 MISSION STREET
      >
      >
      >Dear Mission Based Arts Folks (and their friends):
      >
      >Join the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition (MAC) for a rally and press
      >conference at the SF Planning Department at 10:00am on Thursday June 8.
      >The purpose of the rally is to deliver a list of demands to Planning
      >Director, Gerald Green for the Mission district that will put an end to
      >displacement by the skyrocketing real estate market. Specifically, the
      >paper puts forth ordinances that, if adopted by the City's planning
      >department, will help preserve affordable housing in the Mission
      >district for low income families and low cost commercial sites for small
      >and blue collar businesses.
      >
      >This includes artists and arts organizations too. Most of us who are
      >based in vulnerable neighbourhoods such as the the Mission, Potrero
      >Hill, Hunters Point and SOMAR face the same problems of rising rental
      >costs and eviction as our neighbours. It is important for the arts to
      >be seen and heard supporting other sections of the community as they
      >organize against displacement, as we are affected by it in exactly the
      >same way.
      >
      >The Planning Department is at 1660 Mission Street, just north of Highway
      >101. About a block away from Brady Street (lest we forget what happened
      >there).
      >
      >MAC is a coalition of affordable housing, social service and community
      >based neighbourhood organizations. The arts have not had a very broad
      >presence in the group's planning process (hence the unimaginative name,
      >which was thought up by the group's attorney), but we can make a strong
      >public showing in support of this effort to highlight the failings of
      >the City in stopping the unfettered development we are now experiencing
      >in our community.
      >
      >The June 8 rally is just the first action in what promises to be an
      >eventful summer in the run up to the November elections. This is our
      >last best chance to save the neighbourhood. I hope a few folks
      >representing the arts can show their support.
      >
      >Either reply to this e-mail or call me at 415-626-6745 for more
      >information.
      >
      >Thanks
      >
