      WHEN: Monday evenings from March 4 - April 22, 2002 (8 weeks); 7:30-9:30 PM

      WHERE: SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St. (btw. 8th & 9th Sts.), San
      Francisco

      WHAT: More than plot, a good story is determined by its characters. This
      multi-level writing class will study the process of creating character
      through the elements of fiction: detail, voice, setting, action, and
      dialogue. We will examine published works from writers such as Ha Jin,
      Bharati Mukherjee, Peter Ho Davies, Sherman Alexie, and others. Students
      will be expected to produce new writing every week and, through the course
      of the class, one complete story for workshop.

      HOW MUCH: $130 for KSW members, $150 for non-members

      HOW: Space is reserved upon receipt of check in full only. Send checks to
      Kearny Street Workshop, 934 Brannan St., SF, CA 94103. PLEASE BE ADVISED
      that you may receive a full refund up to the Friday before the first class
      begins (1/1). You may receive a 50% refund up to the Friday before the
      second class begins (1/8). After this time there will be NO REFUNDS.

      WHO: Sabina Chen is a graduate of Stanford University in East Asian Studies
      and of the UC Davis graduate writing program. Sabina has published her
      fiction in High Plains Literary Review and has won scholarships to Squaw
      Valley Community of Writers and Bread Loaf Writers Conference. She is a
      recipient of an Artist Residency from Hedgebrook. She was the featured
      literary artist for KSW's APAture 2001.
