Reuters Says Bush Photo Not 'Malicious,' Reports Wide Interest
U.S. President George W. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice during a
Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the
United Nations in New York Sept. 14, 2005.

NEW YORK With confirmation today that an accidental photo of President Bush at the
United Nations on Wednesday, writing a note to Secretary of State Condeezza Rice about a
ìbathroom break,î was indeed real, newspapers around the U.S. and abroad are now
planning to run it widely. But many, it seems, will treat it as something more than a joke.
A source at the Washington Post tells E&P that the paper is considering it for prominent
play tomorrow morning, in the context that, at least in some minds, it raises questions
about overall perception of the U.S. at the United Nations, right or wrong. Reuters reports
extremely strong interest in the photo today.
The fact is, according to Reuters -- and this has not been widely reported -- President
Bush did indeed take a bathroom break after passing the note to Rice.
This apparently raised some eyebrows around the room, because American
representatives (among others) have a reputation for suddenly bolting, though normally
for a far different reason than this latest one. Fair or not, the European press has already
had a field day with the photo, often centering on the notion that Bush had to ask Rice for
The Times of London, for example, ran no less than three separate articles about it on its
Web site, one at the top of its front page. (It's a Murdoch paper.) One headline reads:
"Excuse me Condi, can I go to the bathroom?" Another story, believe it or not, opens: "The
need to relieve oneself diplomatically has on occasion determined the fate of nations." The
third discusses the sordid history of the particulatar lavatory in question, and contains this
passage: "Medical experts said that the 59-year-old President was wise not to wait any
The headline at the BBC news site suggested that Bush had been "caught short" at the U.N.
summit. The Irish Examiner headline? "To Pee or Not to Pee, That is the Question."
Since the photo first appeared on the Web late yesterday, speculation has centered on
whether the bathroom break reference was just a silly joke and who had written and
passed the note.
Gary Hershorn, news editor-photos for the Americas at Reuters, told E&P today that the
photographer, Rick Wilking, informed him yesterday afternoon that he had observed Bush
pass the note to Rice, and a little later, rise from his seat, leave the room, and then return.
And while some have suggested that Wilking, a well-known photographer just back from
taking some of the most gripping images in New Orleans, was out to embarrass the
president, Hershorn said that the photojournalist had no idea what Bush was writing on
the paper. Wilking assumed the president was taking notes on what some other official
ìRick had no idea what he was shooting, or what Bush was writing,î Hershorn said. ìIf Rick
knew what he was writing we'd have 25 pictures of this, not two.î
The photo was taken at 12:08 p.m. and it was Hershorn, about three hours later, who took
the trouble to examine the photo closely. It was only then that he noticed the writing and
decided to put it on the wire after 4:00.
The photo, as E&P observed Wednesday night in the first story about the incident, shows
Bush scribbling in pencil on a note that already holds the words: "I think I may need a
bathroom break? Is this possible." Wilking is a veteran Washington photographer who has
long covered Bush campaigns and the White House.
As for transmitting the photo, Hershorn says, "There was no malicious intent. That's not
what we do."
There's a simple explanation, even a serious one, for all of this, he adds. Bush, he points
out, is not used to attending meetings at the U.N. and probably did not know what the
protocol was for exiting a room and returning. His question to Rice was ìproperî and not
all that surprising, ìasking someone with more experience there about protocol,î he said.
Wilking told Gelf magazine today that he has not yet heard from the presidentówhom he
says he knows very wellóabout the note. ìIím curious to know what the White House
thinks,î Wilking said.

Protect your vote NOW
Friends: Schwartzenegger must sign SB370.. If he vetoes it and our votes are counted
electronically with no paper trail, we turn into Florida 2000 or Ohio 2004. Our vote will
mean little to nothing. Don't let CAlifornia be manipulated into becoming a rubber stamp
for the right wing. Call the Governor's office 916 445 2841. Say the governor must sign
SB370. Insist that your vote continues to count. Lila Garrett (more material below).
URGENT CALL TO ACTION:
Senate Bill 370 In Jeopardy
Unless we act now, the Governor may veto SB370, leaving us dependent in the upcoming
special election on electronic machines with no paper trail in several California counties.
Our new Schwarzenegger-appointed Secretary of State, Bruce McPherson, opposes
California Senator Debora Bowen's election integrity measure SB370, which requires that
the paper, not electronic tally, be the vote of record during routine audits and recounts .
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
WRITE A PARAGRAPH! Write a letter to your local media, as well as to Mercury News in
opposition to the piece that McPherson wrote on September 9th and/or in support of SB
370, which makes the paper trails on votes count in the event of a recount or audit. Here
is the Mercury news email address for letters to the editor submissions:
SIGN THIS PETITION: http://www.usalone.com/sb370.htm
CALL THE GOVERNOR: Ask him to NOT hide behind his appointee McPherson and to
support S.B. 370 to keep our elections accountable, because the federal court has already
ruled on this issue. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (916) 445-2841
Details About the Bill: ...
SB 370 authored by Sen. Debora Bowen (D-Redondo Beach):
THIS BILL WOULD REQUIRE NO NEW COSTS. It mandates that the state look to a paper
record of ballots cast for recount and/or audit purposes. It is important to note that both
the the Help America Vote Actís Election Assistance Commission, as well as the mandatory
paper trail law to go into effect in California on January 1, 2006, ruled that a paper trail on
all votes is a necessary safeguard for election systems integrity.
SO, WHATíS THE OBJECTION?
In a 9/9/05 Mercury News Op Ed piece, Bruce McPherson said:
ìMy biggest objection in using the paper trail to check voting machine performance is that
it denies many in the disabled community the ability to have the same level of confidence
in the process that all other voters enjoy.î
For Secty. of State Bruce McPhersonís entire Op Ed article, see:

THE FEDERAL COURT & THE FLIMSY ARGUMENTS:
Have you noticed? McPherson's arguments against SB370 are flimsy at best, i.e. the paper
trail lacks a watermark or appropriate paper weight.
Guess what? Invisible computerized ballots don't have those security features either. Also,
his primary argument that counting paper trails would discriminate against the disabled is
unsound and the US federal court on July 6, 2004, concurred. This is an old argument.
The United States District Court, Case No. CV 04-01526, ruled on July 6, 2004, against the
American Association of People with Disabilities, et al., as follows:
ìThe evidence does NOT support the conclusion that the elimination of DREs [paperless
voting systems] would have a discriminatory effect on the visually or manually impaired.
Although it is not disputed that some disabled persons will be unable to vote
independently and in private without the use of DREs [paperless voting systems], it is clear
that they will NOT be deprived of their fundamental right to vote.î [Emphasis added.]For

Carter/Baker Report can't face how the GOP stole America's 2004 election & is rigging
by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman
September 20, 2005
The stolen elections of 2000, 2002 and 2004 are nowhere to be found in the milquetoast
Carter-Baker Report now passing for wisdom on America's broken electoral system.
And unless the public is ready to face the reality that we no longer live in a nation with
credible elections, the 2008 balloting is all but over.
As investigative reporters and registered voters living in central Ohio, we witnessed
firsthand the outright theft of the 2004 election. We also endured the unwillingness of the
Democratic Party to face up to a carefully choreographed "do everything" strategy that
gave the presidency to George W. Bush for a second time, and which could make all
elections to come virtually moot.
The just-issued report of a special commission headed by former President Jimmy Carter
and Bush family consigliore Jim Baker is of little real value.
The report warns that public confidence in the electoral system is disappearing. But it fails
to point out the most obvious cause: in both 2000 and 2004, the presidency was stolen,
and the Republican Party made a mockery of those who took the time and effort to vote. It
did the same in Georgia in 2002, when it overrode the public will to install a Republican US
Senator and Governor. The US Senate races that year in Minnesota and Colorado are also
suspect, to say the least.
Much controversy surrounds the Carter-Baker report over its recommendation that photo
IDs be required of all voters. This is the electoral equivalent of blaming the people of New
Orleans for Hurricane Katrina (which, of course, this administration has essentially done).
A wide range of critics have pointed out that this requirement is racist and repressive. It is
the equivalent of a poll tax and discriminates against people of color, the poor, the elderly,
and civil libertarians who object on principle to a national identification card.
The report also recommends that officials who run elections should not be aggressive
partisans. But the horse is already out of the barn on that one. Florida 2000 and Ohio
2004 were administered by co-chairs of the state Bush-Cheney campaigns. Secretaries of
State Katherine Harris and J. Kenneth Blackwell were both extremely outspoken Republican
advocates allegedly running non-partisan elections. It's now clear that their fraudulent,
illegal vote fixing twice gave George W. Bush the White House.
Among the panel's 87 recommendations is also a warning that electronic voting machines
must have verifiable paper trails. On paper this is important. But there are many ways to
use electronic voting machines to steal elections, even with a paper trail, if the likes of Karl
Rove and Dick Cheney are running the show.
In the most laughable Carter/Baker punch line, the commission warns that "had the
margin of victory for the presidential contest been narrower, the lengthy dispute
that followed the 2000 election could have been repeated."
In fact, in our own preliminary report, we have unearthed more than 180 bullet points
dealing with exactly how the GOP did steal the presidency in Ohio. A "do everything"
Republican assault on democracy used intimidation, fraud, vote theft, computer rigging,
machine distribution manipulation, a fake Homeland security alert, trashing of provisional
ballots, denial of a recount and dozens more "dirty tricks" to produce a 118,775 "official"
margin for Bush that was an utter fiction.
Exit polls in nine swing states showed Kerry a clear winner as late as 12:21 am on election
night. Nationwide exit polls showed him with a 1.5 million vote margin in the popular
But somehow, against all statistical probability, Bush wound up with a popular vote victory
of nearly 3.5 million. And somehow, against all statistical probability, he carried Ohio and
three other states (Iowa, Nevada and New Mexico) where he had been the clear loser in the
exit polls. Ohio alone was sufficient to give him a second term, just as Florida had been in
Such an outcome is beyond implausible -- unless you saw how the Rove-Blackwell
machine stole the vote.
The tactics the GOP perfected in Ohio 2004 are now being honed for re-use in 2008.
Neither Al Gore nor John Kerry nor the core of the Democratic Party has been willing to
face the reality that elections in the United States are all but over. This latest wimp report
from the Carter-Baker whitewash commission does no better.
Unless our electoral system gets a total top-to-bottom revamp by an informed public
willing to deal with the systematic poisoning of American democracy, there is no reason to
bother printing the ballots or plugging in the voting machines in 2008.

BARBARA OLSON LIVES!
The existence of Barbara Olson could unravel the false tales of 9-11 having been
committed by "The Moslems" spun by the real perpetrators, the Secret Team of the Anglo-
American Aristocracy who in their bloody treachery knocked down the Twin Towers and
WTC Building 7 with internal explosives.. The liars and whores of the monopoly press
contend that Barbara Olson died in the supposed crash into the Pentagon of Amercan
Airlines Flight 77. The Pentagon was hit actually by a drone or missile.
As I have mentioned for months now, the estranged wife of Theodore B. Olson turned up
alive, in Europe, with a new face and a wig. A well-known author and tv commentator,
Barbara is now in the custody of Jesuits jointly with secret political police operatives of
Russia and the U.S., among others. Demanding a piece of the "sky is the limit" multi-
trillion Dollar 9-11 blackmail action, through Vatican Intelligence, is the long-time head of
the latter day dreadful Inquisition, Joseph RAT-zinger, a suspected former Nazi, recently
through his own shake-down arm-twisting having forced the Vatican Conclave to crown
him Pope Benedict
In on-going secret meeting sessions, Federal Judges in Chicago and some Judges on the
U.S. Supreme Court are alarmed by all this. Ted Olson is a reputed "Court Bagman" and
king-pin in the use of Coca-Cola/CIA funds and those of Disney, in corrupting five Judges
of the high court in Bush vs Gore, including Antonin Scalia and the late William Rehnquist.
To get his share of the possible extortion loot, what if Ted Olson becomes a turncoat and
whistle-blower? Could the Bush Crime Family survive the truth how the actual elected but
not inaugurated President. Albert Gore, Jr., was shoved aside? Can America survive a
fictitious Presidency engaged in an unconstitutional war, a "for sale" Congress that did not
declare war, and a Judiciary corrupted all the way to the top, and a treasonous 2001 New
Pearl Harbor 9-11?

How To Abandon Microsoft
(Conspiracy Nation, 09/21/05) -- In "Attack Of The Zombie Bots!" (http://www.shout.net/
~bigred/ZombieBots.html), Conspiracy Nation mentioned "persistent reports that the
Windows operating system, whose source code is a Microsoft top secret, contains a secret
back door key available to the NSA."
Thanks to a reader of Conspiracy Nation, who forwarded links to two relevant articles.
("German armed forces ban MS software, citing NSA," http://www.theregister.co.uk/
2001/03/17/german_armed_forces_ban_ms/ and "Microsoft nein danke: snoop scares
dog US IT in Europe," http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/03/19/
One of the above articles, "Microsoft nein danke" ("Microsoft, no thanks"), talks about a
"general European perception that US IT [Information Technology] companies are too
damn close to the NSA [National Security Agency]..."
If you have any experience with the Windows operating system, you may have wondered,
"What is so great about it?" Or, you may be a consumer of limited experience who is
dazzled by your new toy. ("Wow, you point and you click.")
Sitting on your desktop is a computer having the multitasking power of a 1980s-era
mainframe. You may not realize that, since Microsoft has dumbed-down your machine.
They assume, perhaps rightly so, that most people don't want to be bothered by
And anyway, what choice do you have? Apple computer has announced moving to Intel
CPUs, but until that happens, if you have an Intel-based machine you are basically stuck
with Windows. Or are you??
A Brief History
The USA mass media keeps droning on about the great "visionary" Bill Gates. But the true
revolutionaries responsible for bringing computers to the masses were Steve Wozniak and
Steve Jobs. (Call them "The Two Steves," and no, this editor does not use an Apple
In the 1960s and 1970s, IBM had been the dominant force in computers. IBM could have,
but did not, produce desktop computers.
Jobs and Wozniak, the Two Steves, did not have much passion for formal schooling. (This,
incidentally, is often the case with the most creative minds. Walter Scott, Bobby Darin,
Abraham Lincoln... These are a few examples of escapees from mind-numbing
indoctrination.) Tinkering around, they invented a simple computer affordable to most.
The new computer was a hit. IBM was caught off-guard by the upstarts. They hurried to
catch up with a personal computer of their own. But they needed some sort of operating
system -- fast. They latched onto Bill Gates, who had developed a clunker called DOS. And
so, Bill Gates had arrived.
In the mid-1990s, the press could not praise enough a Microsoft operating system called
Windows 95. This editor purchased a new computer at the time and had no choice but to
passively accept W95. And the W95 kept crashing! The operating system did not confine
various applications within areas of memory. Those programs kept wandering into what
should have been restricted segments of memory, and the system would freeze up. There
was no choice except to press the reboot button. Then, a nagging message from Bill Gates
would appear, complaining, "You did not shut down properly" -- as if it were your fault!
W95 was crap, but in the mass media you'd keep reading about how wonderful the
Windows 95 operating system is! It was like rubbing salt in the wound!
Incongrously, in spite of repeated assurances about how marvelous W95 was, there began
appearing on store shelves "Crash Shield" software. These were independently developed
programs meant to circumvent routine crashes of W95. This editor purchased one such
product, the McAfee Crash Shield, and it saved the day.
Has Bill Gates inserted little chips into the minds of journalists? Is that why even today
they fawn upon the great "visionary?"
How To Abandon Microsoft
Disgusted with Microsoft, this editor began delving into the Linux operating system. It was
a bit scarey, since the buzz was, "Only brainy people can understand it." (Not so.) You also
had to get horizontal and vertical refresh rates right, or else your monitor might sizzle in
front of your eyes. This is still somewhat true.
For anyone contemplating a divorce from Microsoft, something called Knoppix might be a
good first step. Knoppix is a CD-ROM which reportedly boots from your CD drive yet does
not install itself onto the hard drive. It is inexpensive, typically costing $5 for a CD.
From there, if you decide to take the plunge, the Red Hat or the Mandriva (formerly
Mandrake) distributions are easiest for beginners. At this time, owners of laptop
computers are advised that their particular situation is a bit iffy. Because of Microsoft's
monopoly dominance, hardware manufacturers often do not take into account the Linux
community. Nanotech hardware in laptops can be especially problematic. Device drivers,
which allow the computer to "talk" with peripheral hardware, are included with hardware
components. Unfortunately the device drivers mostly embrace the "wonderful" windoze
system and Linux volunteers must struggle to catch up and figure out new device drivers.
But what the hay. Maybe Microsoft does have a secret NSA back door. And maybe it is
expensive. And maybe you have to buy all kinds of software (more expense). And maybe
annoying messages do keep popping up while you try to concentrate on your work. And
maybe the Microsoft file system scatters your files all over the drive and you have to
defragment periodically. And maybe the system is vulnerable to hackers. What the hay. It's
so neat. You just point, and you click!
