Please HELP Oregon Forest Watersheds!!! Now is Vital Time to Write***

      SUPER - TIMELY ALERT !!!!!!!!! (October 11th, 2000)

NOW is the ideal time to seek protection for a million acres of
southwestern Oregon which is globally significant in its being a refugia for
rare plants, many conifer varieties, and native salmon species.

Our window of opportunity is that President Clinton wants to leave a
natural lands legacy and is designating lands as National Monuments under the
1906 Antiquities Act. What more appropriate federal lands to target for
better protection than those in the State of Oregon, a state where (despite
its environmental reputation) a mere .5% of its territory is permanently
protected! (that's half of 1% folks, not 5%) Since the mountains of the
Klamath/Siskiyou region (as well as the Appalachians) are the oldest mountain
ranges on the continent, it makes even more sense to designate the proposed
1,048,200 acres of Siskiyou National Forest and Bureau of Land Management
lands as a National Monument and give them strong environmental protections.

We have More LEVERAGE Before the ELECTION

While protecting priceless ecosystems is primary, it is important for
the prospects of the Gore/Lieberman ticket to bolster the environmental
record of the Clinton/Gore Administration which some feel is lacking
domestically and certainly is lacking globally as investors seek to profit
from natural resources all over the planet due to corporate-dominated "free
      trade" policies.

At least 10,000 people paid $7 each (and another 2000 folks were turned
away) to attend a Ralph Nader speech in Portland recently. Not only would a
Siskiyou Wild Rivers National Monument designation in Oregon attract some of
the tide of that state's voters who are leaning toward Nader back to the
Democratic ticket, but the Siskiyous (due to their global biological
significance and some excellent slide show presentation tours by Lou Gold)
are known across the country so could even help the Democratic ticket's
prospects in other "swing" states as well. With Dick Cheney threatening to
review and reverse Clinton's National Monument designations, having the
President designate monuments and then urging folks to elect Gore to fund and
protect these areas are good arguments to attract undecided voters to Mr.

We should go all-out now seeking designation of the Siskiyou Wild Rivers
National Monument!!! In October, there must be such a wave of opinion that
the Clinton/Gore Adm. will resist timber industry pressure and proceed with
this sizable National Monument in the heart of temperate biodiversity. If
such a monument is not designated to assist in the election, we still need to
persist to assure that the Siskiyou Wild Rivers National Monument is
designated before Clinton leaves office. Please help in this great effort
for a sizable crown jewel of a National Monument!!!

Several Factors Make the SISKIYOUS UNIQUE:

      a) the Klamath/Siskiyou region has the most biologically diverse conifer
      forests on Earth;
      b) Rough & Ready Creek/West Fork Illinois River is the most botanically
diverse watershed in Oregon -- but Rough & Ready is threatened by
privatization and strip-mining, while the undammed Illinois River is ideal to
      protect for its remaining native salmon species;
      c) the east-west Siskiyous were only spottily glaciated during the last Ice
Age and contain unusual soils/minerals, so are the Noah's Ark center for
      diversity of conifers, rare plants, and native salmon;
      d) the Kalmiopsis Wilderness and adjacent wildlands provide core habitat for
many species and could well be the most critical wildlands near the West
      e) the Siskiyous are a center for both currently designated as well as
      potential Wild and Scenic Rivers;
      f) low-elevation ancient forests are now extremely rare, yet are still being
targetted by the Bureau of Land Management (such as the forests of Takilma
and at the headwaters of Deer Creek).

Some of the main groups calling for a Siskiyou Wild Rivers National
Monument are the Siskiyou Project, American Lands Alliance, Wilderness
Society, and World Wildlife Fund. It is quite easy to FAX MESSAGES to the
PRESIDENT and to OREGON'S GOVERNOR (and a copy to Interior Secretary Babbitt)
by visiting the <www.SISKIYOURIVERS.org> website. Take the great virtual
tour of the region. Send the proposed message, plus PLEASE add your own
personal message to the prepared one! The Siskiyou Project also has a great
      website at <www.siskiyou.org>.

PLEEEEEEEASE WRITE LETTERS like Never Before !!!

The following officials must receive lots of convincing mail during the
middle of October in order to motivate them to do the on-the-ground and legal
groundwork to designate the Siskiyou Wild Rivers Nat'l Monument (especially
if it is to happen before the election). Using your own words is best, while
some consider legible hand-written letters to be the most helpful. Just do
      it !!! Thanks!

ALERT: Help stop secret searches provision!
      Privacy News Update (owner-privacy-news@...)

You are receiving this update because you registered
at DefendYourPrivacy.com, the site that was instrumental in
killing the FDIC's Know Your Customer regulation last year.
We are writing to inform you about another immediate threat
to your privacy -- a bill that Congress could pass on Thursday
or Friday. However, if you do not want to receive further
updates, please use the unsubscribe directions at the end of
      this message.

Secret searches provision could pass Congress by Friday,
and we need your help to stop it!

The week before Congress adjourns is always a hazardous time for
privacy rights, and this week is no exception. Politicians are
rushing to pass several mammoth spending bills by Friday so they
      can leave Washington to campaign.

Unfortunately, one of those bills may contain another "sneak
attack" on your privacy: a provision empowering federal
bureaucrats to subpoena electronic records without a warrant --
and without ever having to notify the owner that their property
      has been searched.

Sources on Capitol Hill are warning that in the final crush of
business, Congress may quietly approve this bill -- S. 2516, the
Fugitive Apprehension Act of 2000 -- or slip it into an unrelated

Please read this brief background item and take the action
      described below immediately.

The Fugitive Apprehension Act of 2000 (S. 2516),
sponsored by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-UT, and Patrick Leahy, D-VT,
passed the Senate on July 26. If it passes the House this week
      it will become law.

Its stated purpose is to "fund task forces to locate and apprehend
fugitives in federal, state and local felony criminal cases and
give administrative subpoena authority to the United States
      Marshals Service."

Interestingly, the bill defines the term fugitive as someone who
has merely been "accused" and not necessarily convicted of a crime.

And although the bill appears to be focused on "fugitives," it
gives the government alarming new powers to search the property
owned or controlled by people who are merely witnesses. You could
be considered a witness if you have a friend, roommate, neighbor,
spouse, or family member who is merely under investigation by a
      government agency.

If that happens, government agents would have the power to issue
an "administrative subpoena," or the power to search your property
and private records without a court order -- and without ever
having to tell you they did so.

Specifically, S. 2516 gives federal bureaucrats the power to:

      * Search your "electronic data," such as bank records,
school records, medical data, phone bills, and e-mail
account. The bill says the government "may subpoena
witnesses for the purpose of the production of any
tangible records (including books, papers, documents,
electronic data, and other tangible and intangible
items) that are relevant to determining the whereabouts
      of the fugitive."

      * Demand that a third party, such as your bank or
Internet Service Provider, turn over your personal

      * Order that third party to refrain from telling you that
your records have been searched and/or seized by the
government. Under a "delayed notice" provision in
Section 1075 (g), the bill says the government may
apply for an order "commanding the provider of
electronic communication service or remote computing
service not to notify any other person of the existence
      of the subpoena."

      * Gives anyone who provides this information about you
immunity from civil liability, meaning they can't be
held accountable for violating your privacy -- or for
failing to tell you that they have disseminated your

This dramatic expansion of government power could pass Congress
as early as Thursday, so please help us kill it immediately.

      WHAT TO DO:

Contact your Congressional representative and your two U.S.
Senators immediately by calling the Capitol Hill switchboard at
      (202) 225-3121 or (202) 224-3121.

      WHAT TO SAY:

      (1) Identify yourself and let them know you are a voter
in their district. Leave your name, address, complete with ZIP
code, and phone number. Please be brief, especially if you are
      leaving a message.

      (2) Tell them to vote NO on S. 2516, the Fugitive
Apprehension Act of 2000, sponsored by Sens. Hatch and Leahy.
Tell them to vote against this bill in whatever form it takes.
For example, it may be snuck through as an amendment to HR 3048,
The Presidential Protection Act of 2000. Tell them to vote NO
on any larger bill that contains this language.

      (3) Let them know that you oppose this bill because:

      * It is a flagrant attack on your privacy rights.
Federal employees have no business rifling
through your personal property or electronic
records simply because an acquaintance or
business associate may be under investigation.

      * It is an unconstitutional search, because no
court order or search warrant is required.

      * The "secret searches" provision is especially
      objectionable. Empowering federal bureaucrats
to violate your privacy is bad enough, but
allowing them to do so without ever notifying
you is outrageous, because that makes it
      impossible to hold them accountable.

      (4) Ask them to confirm their position on this secret
searches bill, since you'll want to show their letter to all of
your friends and relatives -- who are also registered voters in
      their district.

      (5) Finally, E-mail this "action item" to a friend, and
ask them to call their representative, too.

      Thank you for your help!

Illegal GE Corn Found in More Taco Shells

      October 12, 2000

Genetically Engineered Food Alert, a coalition of health, consumer and
environmental groups, announced that samples of Safeway brand taco shells
were found to contain genetically engineered Starlink corn. The corn, not
approved for direct human consumption, is the same contaminant discovered by
Genetically Engineered Food Alert in Taco Bell brand taco shells recalled by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Kraft Company in September

Safeway responded by pulling the taco shells from their shelves in the more
than 1600 Safeway and Vons stores nationwide.

Starlink, a corn that contains a genetically engineered plant pesticide and
marketed by the biotechnology company Aventis, is currently approved only
for animal consumption by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A
protein (Cry9C) found in the corn was found to be heat stable and resistant
to stomach acids and enzymes, indicating a potential allergen. Possible
health effects of food allergens range from nausea to anaphylactic shock,
but are not currently known due to lack of adequate testing by government
      and industry.

Genetically Engineered Food Alert condemned the presence, as indicated by
the test results, of the genetically engineered ingredient and called the
second contamination incident evidence of FDA's failure to provide adequate
oversight of food biotechnology corporations and food producers.

"The recall of Taco Bell taco shells distributed by Kraft and the recent
finding of Starlink corn in Safeway products underscores the need for
stronger government regulation over genetically engineered foods," said
Ronnie Cummins, Director of Organic Consumers Association. "The message from
American consumers is clear. We want Safeway and America's largest food
corporations to follow the lead of their European counterparts and remove
all genetically engineered ingredients from their brand name products."

While these genetically engineered ingredients continue to enter the market,
the FDA refuses to mandate pre-market safety testing of genetically
engineered ingredients or labeling so that consumers know which foods
contain them. The coalition has called on the FDA to test for the presence
of Cry9C corn in all products containing non-organic yellow corn #2, the
class of corn to which Cry9C belongs. The coalition also called on the FDA
to conduct a thorough investigation into numerous reports of illness made to
FDA and alleged to have been caused by consumption of contaminated taco

FDA officially recalled the Taco Bell taco shells on October 2, 2000, after
the Kraft Company voluntarily recalled the product from grocery store
shells. The Agency declared a class II recall, defined as "a situation in
which the use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or
medically reversible adverse health effects." Genetically Engineered Food
Alert called on the FDA to take the same action on the Safeway brand taco

Aventis, under the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
has agreed to purchase the Starlink crops that are currently being grown and
harvested in the United States, an undertaking estimated to cost the company
from US$90 to $100 million, according to USDA. Aventis has also announced
that sales of Starlink corn hybrids for 2001 had been halted.

An estimated 45 million bushels of Starlink corn were grown this year by
U.S. farmers in more than 20 states. Reports are starting to surface,
however, that some farmers were not told to segregate Starlink to ensure
that it did not enter the human food chain. A USDA spokesperson stated that
the USDA will not buy Starlink corn that has been blended in bins with other
