XRATEDKITEBOARDING PRESS RELEASE
- X Rated Riding Party Unites Pros and Joes
By Peter Weisberg
Until this year, riding alongside your favorite pro often involved traveling
to crowded spots such as Maui only to get yelled at for being in the way. Now
there's a way to ride alongside and save some embarrassing heckling: the new
X Rated Kiteboarding trips.
Average Joes and leading pros came together this past July in the Dominican
Republic for the inaugural event-the 2003 X Rated Riding Party. Over thirty
intermediate kiters rode, hung out and partied for seven days with Chuck
Patterson, Felix Pivec, Corky Cullen, Top Hat, Hamish Macdonald, Litewave Dave, Laurel
Eastman, Michelle Glazman and Zach Kleppe and Ryan Riccitelli. Neil
Hutchinson, owner of X Rated Kiteboarding in Cabarete, got this party started and is
already planning to hold it every July, making it even bigger in 2004.
"I put together the X Rated Riding Party so that everyone could participate,"
Hutchinson says. "It doesn't matter if you're a pro or a weekend warrior." He
took the crew on an extensive tour of the D.R.'s secret riding spots, even if
that meant traveling more than three hours through an exotic rainforest to
At the end of the weeklong trip, the participants voted on winning riders in
four categories. "Best Trick" went to Hamish for his unbelievable Ariel 360
handle pass re-entry off the face of a wave at Encuentro. Felix took "Best Wave"
for an 8-foot Indy Ariel re-entry. White chunks were flying. Ian Hutchinson
and Chuck both earned "Best Wipeout" for when Chuck accidentally clipped Ian
while riding by. And everyone voted Top Hat as "Best Overall Kiteboarder," an
honor intended for the rider who had spent the most time on the water, exhibited
the best attitude and, just as important, took part in all the social
gatherings. Top Hat's sense of humor and insane riding skills were an inspiration to
The party also served as a kickoff for X Rated Kiteboarding's riding tours.
The one-week trips cater to a smaller group of eight intermediate kiteboarders,
defined as someone who can stay upwind. Similar to the big party, the trips
will have the guests learning from a top pro while Neil chauffeurs them to the
most virgin spots in the Dominican Republic, and eventually throughout the
Caribbean. The first trip was scheduled to start August 29 with more trips to
come. "We want the everyday kiteboarder to come and live the dream with us for a
week," he says, "and learn whatever they want to learn from the best in the
world while riding spots they never dreamed of."
