[ksurf] Minimum Board Speed to Plane
- One thing to keep into mind, is that unlike land based traction
activities, the kiteboards have a minimum speed to 'plane'. Any speed
below this, and kitesurfing is impossible. This of course is a
function of the riders weight vs. the size (volume) of the board. In
simple terms, with a set of different volume boards, the highest volume
board will have the lowest planing speed.
In my quest to plane in the lightest winds possible, I purchased a 10.5
C Quad, which has tremendous and solid pull in really light winds.
However, this pull may not be the right type of pull to get me planing
on the 6'6" Quadrifoil board for the winds I'll be flying the 10.5 in.
It is possible that I could be overpowered 'before' I get enough speed
to plane. The pull will be solid, but slow...Any thoughts on this? I
may have to buy a higher volume board if it doesnt work (winds have
been dead for weeks here)...
