      Hi,

Emily Cohen is the full-time, year round, SW Willow Flycatcher crew chief for
      Mary Whitfield.

Last year Emily looked at Lawrence's Goldfinches with an eye toward starting a
research project this field season. That project is now underway. Emily is
currently banding Lesser Goldfinches and Lawrence's Goldfinches on the Kern
River Preserve in hopes of getting a large enough sample size banded in order
to carrying on statistically meaningful research on the interactions (and
non-interactions) of these two locally common nesting species. Her banding
efforts are concentrated along the ranch road leading west from Kern River
      Preserve Headquarters.

Kern County birders may/can help in this project by carefully checking
Lawrence's Goldfinches for aluminum bands and color combination bands not only
here in the South Fork Valley, but wherever you might encounter this species
(on wintering grounds would be exciting, too). I expect to talk with Emily in
depth later this week to get color band combinations, etc., to relay on to
      you.

      Thank you,

      Bob
