      SPECIAL ATTENTION BIRD CALLS/SONGS/ID MARKS (Please peruse before Saturday)/

      HERP-ECOLOGY'S "BUZ" LUNSFORD'S LIST OF LIVE HERPS ON HAND SATURDAY/

      CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST, SUMMER BIRD COUNT, & BAR-BE-CUE LUNCH DETAILS/

      UPDATE:
      To my knowledge there are currently 48 birders signed up for this Saturday's
      bird count and bar-be-cue lunch. Thanks to all of you who already are
      scheduled
      to come and count. We will have bar-be-cue lunches ($10) for up to 60 people.
      There are still plenty of territories that need primary or additional
      coverage.
      There is plenty of room for more counters. So, if you still wish to come count
      and eat, please let me know by 6pm Friday evening when I will make territory
      assignments. Thanks. Bob Barnes

      4am-5am: Continental Breakfast (FREE) and Territory Assignment at Kern
      River Preserve/
      4am-5am (start) -11:30am (finish): Summer Bird Count/
      11:30am-12:30pm: Catered lunch ($10) & species review/locations at
      KRP/

      11:30pm-12:30pm: Herp-Ecology's Buz Lunsford with live Kern watershed
      reptiles and amphibians temporarily on loan from nature/
      12:30pm-Conclusion: Follow-up birding of choice & social gatherings/

      SPECIAL ATTENTION BIRD CALLS/SONGS/ID MARKS to have firmly in mind (We will
      go
      over known historic and current 2001 locations during count "launching"
      4am-5am, Saturday.):
      Least Bittern (pre-dawn at Prince's Pond, June, 2001)
      Yellow-billed Cuckoo (earliest mass arrival - first week of June, 2001)
      Long-eared Owl (2000 count)
      Broad-tailed Hummingbird (unconfirmed reports this Tuesday, July 3rd, at KRP
      feeders)
      Eastern Wood-Pewee (one summer)
      Willow Flycatcher (find locations for researcher follow-up)
      Least Flycatcher (one late June record)
      Vermilion Flycatcher (none so far in 2001)
      Brown-crested Flycatcher (seems to be a banner year with 10-11 pairs)
      Yellow-throated Vireo (one summer...2001 was a "good" year for YTVI in
      California)
      Red-eyed Vireo (several most summers including 2000 & 2001)
      Marsh Wren (A WRITE UP BIRD)
      Swainson's Thrush (some summers)
      Lucy's Warbler (two summers including 2001)
      Northern Parula (many summers including five individuals in 2000, mid-June
      2001)
      Black-and-white Warbler (many summers including 2000 & 2001)
      American Redstart (many summers)
      Northern Waterthrush (June, 2001...territorial...singing up high in trees)
      Hooded Warbler (some summers/one summer of nesting; 2001 "good" CA yr.)
      Yellow-breasted Chat (seem to be noticeably more numerous this year)
      Summer Tanager (seem to be plentiful in 2001)
      Cassin's Sparrow (June 10-14, 2001...singing/skylarking...present elsewhere
      in
      Valley?)
      Grasshopper Sparrow (1999 & 2000 count)
      Rose-breasted Grosbeak (many summers including 2000)
      Indigo Bunting (several reports from several locations in 2001)
      Dickcissel (June 1 & 2...singing/territorial...present elsewhere in Valley?)
      Tricolored Blackbird (June colonies at west end of SFk Wildlife Area and on n.
      edge of Cane Brake ER)
      Lawrence's Goldfinch (numbers way down from early June, but still present)
