BIRDING THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA w. Bob Steele & Bob Barnes
Tehachapi Mountains Birding Club Monthly Program
      7pm-9pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2003
Golden Hills Elementary School, 20215 Park Road, Tehachapi

On January 6, 2002, Bob Steele approached Bob Barnes at the compilation
dinner after the South Fork (Kern River) Valley Christmas Bird Count and
said, "I propose that you and I prepare an article for submission to the
American Birding Association's 'Birding' magazine. I would do the
photography and you would do the writing." The two Bobs agreed to go for
it. Through October 2002 Bob Steele made dozens of trips to the Kern River
Valley and surrounding mountains to get as many high-quality photographs of
birds and habitats as possible for submission to "Birding" photo editor
Brian Small. In the meantime, Bob Barnes started writing elements of the
article in his mind, committing his words to paper in November 2002. The
article was then submitted to "Birding" Editor Ted Floyd who approved it
for April 2003 issue publication and mailing this mid-March 2003, fourteen
      and one-half months after conception!

TMBC's March 11, 2003 meeting will feature Bob Barnes and Bob Steele
giving a slide and lecture presentation entitled: "Find It Here: Birding
the Kern River Valley and Southern Sierra Nevada of California." Bob Barnes
will spend the first few minutes giving us an update of happenings at
Audubon-California's 1778-acre, three unit Kern River Preserve in Weldon
where he serves as Outreach Director. Bob B. will then introduce Bob Steele
who will give the main program using several slides of the exquisite bird
photos he took during this past year's "Birding" magazine project.

The program will conclude with Bob Steele taking a minute or two to talk
about the Bird Photography Workshop he will be conducting for the April
26th & 27th Kern River Valley Festival of the Bioregions (The KRV BioFest),
Bob Barnes telling us about the other offerings at the upcoming BioFest,
and a short Q & A session with the entire audience. Bob and Bob will remain
to converse for several minutes after the formal program ends.

This promises to be a fascinating, not-to-be-missed program packed full
information and breath-taking photos of our local bird species. See you
      there!
