Happy New Year Everyone!
Wow, between crazy, unpredictable holiday hours, an attack of the plague, broken ribs and throw in a funeral, I for one, am glad that this is a new year! Throw out the old and welcome in the new. FOR SURE!!
So, the standard questions apply.... What are your resolutions? Finish projects before starting another? Learn another skill? Take another class? Finally get that stash under control? Whatever it is, the only way to get it done is to start it!
Today at the cabin : It's snowing. It's Northern Michigan so get used to me saying that. Yeah, it's snowing, not a lot, just a bit, but up here it pretty much snows everyday. There's a frozen stillness in the air, and if you stop doing everything, and just "be", you can hear the magic in the air.

Can you tell me what echo quilting is?
Kaye says....Echo quilting is a quilt line repeated over the surface at even measures. It is often used to fill in a background area and the first line is generally parallel to the edges of a pieced or appliqued shape. Thus, the repeated lines "echo" that shape.

2014 to Australia and New Zealand Quilting Cruise
February 2014 Quilting Cruise....
Quilters, add this to your Bucket List -a Quilting Cruise.
Many quilting teachers have gotten into the cruising mode to combine quilting classes with cruising. What could be better? Visit exotic ports, shopping for fabrics, travelling with other quilters, 3+ meals a day, someone to clean up your cabin while you relax and take quilting classes while at sea.
Has this ever happened to you? A late night phone call from a man with an Australian accent asking if you would like to cruise the Caribbean with him. This happened to me in 1989. Of course, I said “what did you say?â€. Was this one of those phone calls I had been warned about? So, being curious, I said “tell me moreâ€, thinking I should just hang up on this obscene phone call. He turned out to be a travel agent who wanted to put together a quilting cruise with me as the featured teacher. I had no idea how this worked, assuming it was legitimate. Never having been on a cruise, I called my friend, Jane, from Florida who had been on several cruises; she agreed to join me and also teach some on-board classes.
Since all of our work is done on a sewing machine, we would need sewing machines. How do we go about doing that? We got our first taste of dealing with customs, because sewing machines are made outside the US; and we were taking these machines out of the country and then bringing them back. Problem solved! The Viking sewing machine company, which was the major sponsor for my PBS-TV show, Strip Quilting, came to our rescue; they furnished the machines and also sent one of their educators on the cruise. Little by little, everything fell into place.
In 1990, our first quilting cruise left port with fourteen of us, including three teachers and husbands.
We have grown over the years until now we average about 85-120 quilters on each cruise, many of whom have returned several times. And the rest is history. I have become addicted to cruising as well as being already addicted to quilting. What a great life! And to think, I almost hung up on what I thought might be an obscene phone call, but instead was a life-changing event.
What cruise stories I could tell -about machines blowing up, losing machines in customs, "George" (who came along on our cruise in a box), about shopping in the water, buying molas in the San Blas Islands of Panama. Many of these stories have become part of my quilting lectures and are also included in my book, Everyone Can Quilt.
In February of 2013, we will return to the Western Caribbean for my 14th quilting cruise; this time on the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas.
A big celebration is being planning with my 15th quilting cruise in February of 2014 with a combination 22-day land tour and quilting cruise to Australia and New Zealand.

Kaye's Ideas on Stash Organization....
I'm finally trying to organize my fabrics, what a job! Do you have any suggestions?
I sort my fabric by color schemes. All my reds together, same with blues, you get the idea. I, like everyone else, have to put them in different places to accommodate all the fabric I have. My solution is to put it in wire baskets, clear plastic drawers, and regular drawers with the color posted on the drawer front. That way when I need, say a pink, I just go to that bin or drawer, and there are all the pinks I have in my stash. Oh yes, and roll your fabric. It takes less space and less digging time.
There you have it! Now you've got no excuse to get your stash organized! lol
Show and Tell....
Here is a picture of a quilt I made with the Jumping Jacks pattern. I have yet to finish the sample I started in class.
This quilt is going to a sister-in-law who has just found out that her cancer has returned.
Thanks for the quick pattern and ease of instructions.
Send is your creations. Include a picture or two and a short story about your quilt/tablerunner or wallhanging (or other) and we'll put it on our Show and Tell Page!

I often wondered just what women in earlier centuries used for batting.
They used pretty much anything they could get their hands on. Unless you were a women of means, you couldn't just run out and buy something, so they made due with the things around them. This ranged from old blankets to newspapers to feathers and even leaves. Sure makes us appreciate our century!
I have a bad habit of starting more projects before finishing others I have already begun. Any ideas on how to be more disciplined?
Why would you want to be? People who force themselves to do that, in my opinion, are taking all the fun and adventure out of quilting! Everyone tends to get bored at one time or another with a project. I think it's better to put it aside and let it rest. When you do go back to it, it will be fresh again and you'll probably have many more fantastic ideas for your quilt. If you do insist on being that diligent, maybe you should think about smaller projects that you can get done faster. Another way is to join a group or guild. It's a great way to meet new friends and get new ideas. You'll be surprised how much you can get done while chatting away with a friend.

How Can I....
How can I enlarge a quilt without taking away from the current design?
Kaye says: I would add one or two plain borders, one light and one dark. This will actually frame your design rather than detract from it.
