Tips and Humor From Kaye....
Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.
What Did She Say....Did you ever teach a class to non-English-speaking students? How did I know they didn't speak English?
They didn't laugh at my jokes. What other reason could there be?
In Germany, I taught a Starmaker class to Japanese students. They understood the concepts and techniques and did very well in class, but they just didn't get the jokes.
Helen Can Do It....
During a consumer show, the vendor in the next booth was doing a demonstration. A gentleman watched for quite awhile then asked, "Do you really need to know anything to be able to do this?"
Unsure of how to answer, she said, "Not really, it is pretty easy."
"Good. I'll be back in a minute." He hurried down the aisle, yelling, "Helen, I found something you can do."

Q....If you tie a quilt using the sewing machine, would it be best to do that before doing the binding to make sure it lays nice and flat without any puckers....Louise
K....Machine tying your quilt can be done before or after the binding. Because you only sew each of the ties in place, the fabric layers won't move so there won't be any puckers.
Q: I am trying to learn free motion quilting. My upper thread keeps breaking no matter what needle or thread I use. What can you suggest?
K: The one thing that comes to mind is that maybe you are jerking the fabric while the needle is down in the quilt still. To avoid this, remember to always run your machine very fast and move your fabric very slow and steady.
Q: When counting the number of quilting stitches in an inch, do you count both front and back?
K: Both sides are counted. The easiest way to do this is to count one side and then just multiply by 2.
The origins of the traditional "Log Cabin" design can be traced back to British origins. It was most likely brought to America by Scottish and Irish emigrants.
"Shaking the Cat" meant that a cat was placed on a quilt and usually four girls would grasp the edges and shake the quilt. When the cat jumped off, the girl closest to the cat would marry next!
Quilters believe that if you sleep under a new quilt, your dreams will come true!
Quilters believe that if a thread broke while quilting, it would bring bad luck!
During the 18th century, very few quilts were entirely pieced. If there was no applique in the center of the quilt, it was added to the border.
