Dakshagraam boon to gem, jewellery sector
Dakshagraam, an innovative productivity-improving concept in the gem and jewellery sector, has increased production volume without increasing the number of workers in a unit.
Dilip Chenoy, Managing Director & CEO of National Skill Development Corporation, said that Dakshagraam provided a safe and healthy working environment leading to higher retention of workers, attracting fresh talent and even increased productive lifespan of a skilled worker leading to better earnings.
This model ecosystem has also managed to raise the production volume without increasing the number of karigars (workers) in each unit, Chenoy said at an event organised by MCC Chamber of Commerce.
In this NSDC-supported model, a jewellery manufacturing and training centre housing 500 workers ensures best practices and improvement in lifestyle of the worker. He pointed out that existing environment factors in the industry lead to problems such as eye strain, back pain, respiratory problems owing to lack of information on safety and handling hazardous chemicals such as cadmium, mercury and lead. In fact, many karigars end up retiring at the age of 35 , he said.
