Despite their regular drive against drunk driving by Mumbai Traffic police,
the cases of drunk driving in Mumbai has gone up by more than 12.48 per cent
      in 2013, compared to 2012.

The figures provided by the police showed that in 2013, 15,897 drunk drivers
were booked and the court had collected a total fine of Rs1.03 crore from
these offenders. At least 4,973 offenders were sent to jail and a total 3,422
driving licences were suspended by the court.

In 2012, the traffic police had arrested 14,133 drunk drivers and the court
collected a total fine 1.40 crore from these offenders. The number of
offenders that were sent to jail was 5,260 and a total of 4,088 driving
      licences were suspended.

While citing the reason for the increase in drunk-driving cases last year,
deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) Pratap Dighavkar said, “Earlier,
the traffic police were conducting one or two nakabandis in a week across the
city after 11pm which went on till the wee hours. However, for the past six
months, we have been conducting three nakabandis in a week to curb the menace
of drunk driving. Besides, we also conducted special drives during Dipawali
and the last seven days leading to the New Year (December 25 to December
      31).”

He added that the police succeeded in booking over 4 lakh traffic offenders
for over-speeding, dangerous driving, jumping signals, riding bikes without
helmets, double parking in the East, West and North regions in 2013 by
conducting regular drives across the city.

There were as many as 10 fatal accidents across the city on December 31,
2006. Therefore, the traffic police had launched a sustained drunk driving
campaign from June 20, 2007 to prevent accidents due to drunken driving,
over-speeding and dangerous driving. The police had booked as many as 7,011
drunken drivers till December 31, 2007.
