      Dear Readers,

Our Feature this week is about Georgian theatre director Robert Sturua's approach to theatre. The director is famous for his interpretations of plays by Shakespeare, Brecht, Beckett and other well-known playwrights. Marina Vasadze's article gives us an insight into the director's methodology and style of work. She refers in particular to two stage adaptations by Sturua of Shakespeare's plays- RICHARD III and TWELFTH NIGHT.

We have uploaded previews of a number of new plays such as LOVE AFFAIR (Hindi), THE COMEDY KITCHEN (English/Hindi), SHAKESPEARE, WHO? (English), JUTHU BOLO JALSA KARO (Gujarati). Thespo @ Prithvi will present GOD = FATHER (Marathi) early next week. Marathi Vishesh at the NCPA will present CHAFA. The play produced by Maharashtra Cultural Centre in Pune is based on an eponymous story by CT Khanolkar. The review of the play is available on our website.

The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2013 starts February 2. Gillo Theatre Repertory will be presenting MISTER JEEJEEBHOY AND THE BIRDS, a play for children. To find out more about the festival and the daily programmes visit http://www.kalaghodaassociation.com/cat.aspx?Id=2

"There seems to be a wide divergence of opinion today as to what the theatre really is. Some people say it is a temple, some say it is a brothel, some say it is a laboratory, or a workshop, or it may be an art, or a plaything, or a corporation. But whatever it is, one thing is true about it. There is not enough fine workmanship in it. There is too much incompetence in it. The theatre demands of its craftsmen that they know their jobs. The theatre is a school. We shall never have done with studying and learning. In the theatre, as in life, we try first to free ourselves, as far as we can, from our own limitations. Then we can begin to practice 'this noble and magicall art.' Then we may begin to dream."
      ~ Robert Edmond Jones
