Intro to Vocational Training courses at Rural Service Centre, Sakwar
- HistorySakwar is situated on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway (NH 8) about 82 kms from Mumbai in Taluka Vasai, District Thane.
In the year 1972 Ramakrishna Mission identified this backward area to serve people residing in about 500 villages of Vasai, Palghar, Dahanu, Vikramgad, Wada, Jawahar, Mokhada, Bhiwandi, Sahapur Talukas of Thane District (with a total population of about 45,000).
In 1975, the Rural Health and Welfare Programme Centre was inaugurated on a spacious land measuring 8 acres and 28 gunthas leased by the Government of Maharashtra at Village Sakwar.
The Centre thus set up has been serving the rural, tribal villages since 1972. It started with medical camps on Sundays and has grown into a total community enablement model.Education ActivitiesA separate building has been built for education activities, including a hostel for boys, and class rooms.
Apart from the regular training, students also participate in work on the campus (including working in the Dairy Farm, agricultural work, cultural events etc.) which provides extensive practical experience and moulds their personality. The students are also imparted spiritual training.
Every year about 100 students are admitted to various courses of 6 months to 1 year duration. At the end of the course students are presented with certificates and tools to start the work. Students stay in the hostel on the campus. They are also provided food and medical aid, free of cost.
The workshops are well-equipped and modern. The teaching staff is experienced. The course work includes both theory and practical. For some courses the final examinations are carried out by Government Technical Education Department.

Inter-School elocution competitions in Marathi were started in 2002 on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda to inculcate values in ones life. They are open to boys and girls from Std. 1st to 10th.
To encourage participation, arrangements are made for conveyance for students from surrounding villages. Refreshments and lunch is also served.
The Centre has a library with books mainly on the lives and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and religious books. School and Village libraries are supplied books on request.
Exhibition and Slide Shows
The Sakwar Centre has also been engaged in promoting awareness on harmonious living, good health and hygiene and all-round happiness.
For this purpose, representatives visit schools, colleges, technical institutions and village of Gram Panchayats. Here, they arrange slide shows and exhibitions of photographs, books and periodicals on the lives and messages of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and also of other well-known saints of India.
