Proposal making proof of parking a must gathers dust
- Proposal making proof of parking a must gathers dust....Akshay DeshmaneAs parking problems in the city get worse, a major amendment to the law that makes proof of parking space mandatory before vehicle registration continues to gather dust in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).As DNA reported on October 19 last year, the Sunder committee proposed an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Act, which suggested that proof of parking space be compulsorily submitted by vehicle owners before the time of registration. This amendment would improve the parking situation, especially in metropolitan cities. However, with an earlier version of amendments already under consideration in the Lok Sabha, the recommendations of the Sunder Committee have taken a backseat. However, the Maharashtra government is in favour of the proposal. The existing road space should be available for movement of vehicles and not their (arbitrary and illegal) parking. One sees so many vehicles parked on roads. In a space-starved city such as Mumbai, we should be able to make optimum utilisation of roads for public transport, and this proposal will help us in this direction, said VN More, state transport commissioner.
