Deshbhakti Andolan, which was one and the only organisation from Mumbai to intervene in the supreme court against Sanjay Dutt's application seeking a stay of his conviction to contest Lok Sabha election, has welcomed the apex court's verdict. In a press release, national convenor of Deshbhakti Andolan, Dr Avisha, who was the intervenor, said this was the first step against the decriminalisation of Indian politics.
Dr Avisha stated in a press release that the SC has given a big boost to Indian democracy and to the rule of law. The floodgates of criminalisation of politics would have been opened had the SC ruled otherwise.

The Supreme Court on Monday (March 30) had heard intervenor applications filed by Deshbhakti Andolan and three others opposing the application filed by actor Sanjay Dutt seeking to stay his conviction under the Arms Act. Sunil Fernandes was the advocate for Deshbhakti Andolan and Prashant Bhushan was the counsel for Deshbhakti Andolan and also for a group of five citizens of Lucknow.. The CBI through its counsel Gopal Subramaniam too opposed Dutt's application.

Deshbhakti Andolan had filed the intervenor application as a part of its movement against criminalisation of politics. Dr Avisha stated in her application that the Representation of the People Act clearly prohibited convicts from contesting elections. She said if Dutt, who was arrested under TADA in connection with the Mumbai serial bomb blasts of March, 1993, was allowed to contest the polls then it would encourage hundreds of other criminals to enter our Parliament and Legislatures and make a complete mockery of Indian democracy. She stated in a press release that if convicts are permitted to contest polls and if they are elected then those policemen and prosecutors who were responsible for their conviction would have to report to them.
