The Shivaji statue will be built on a 18-acre rock in theArabian Sea , nearly 4.5km from the Marine Drive seashore.
Two agencies, which specialise in marine and environments, have been asked to submit a feasibility study by January 10, 2013. The project is expected to be finalised within a week after that.
Guardian minister of Mumbai Jayant Patil, who heads a high-power committee formed to expedite the project, has gone through the preliminary proposal.
The rock with a wide base is seen during low tides. It is comparatively deeper in the sea than the earlier site, Patil said. I think this would prove to be of greater tourist interest. A statue at the earlier spot, which was 1km from the seashore, would have been easily visible from the seashore... The deeper the location, the more interesting it would be.
The minister said the new spot is at the central point in between Bhavan and Navy Nagar coastlines. Patil said most of the permissions would have to be sought from the environment ministry.
Bharat Yamsanwar, architect of Team One, which has been finalised for the project, said: The newly proposed site will be finalised once the survey is conducted in the next couple of days.
The state government had formed the high-power committee, headed by Patil, after the opposition blasted the government during last months winter session. They had alleged the government was sitting on the project for months.
