Docs protest Padma Bhushan to ITC chief .....Lata Mishra
Write letter to Prime Minister asking that the award be withdrawn as the brand is responsible for several cancer deaths in the country every year

Taking a strong exception to the Padma Bhushan being awarded to ITC Chairman Yogesh Chander Deveshwar, cancer specialists and antitobacco activists across the country have written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, asking that the award be withdrawn.

The letter,a copy of which is with Mumbai Mirror, says: It is unfortunate that a person heading the business of selling a product that kills half of its consumers is being considered for a prestigious national award.

Every year we remove voice boxes from 150 patients who have contracted cancer due to smoking.Such patients remain incapable of talking for the rest of their lives. It is very painful to see their condition. The government of India is not taking any action against this malaise, said Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate professor of the head and neck department at Tata Memorial Hospital.

The letter was sent to the PM on January 29.The doctors also plan to hold a nationwide protest and sport black bands. The date has not yet been finalised.

Dr Chaturvedi added that the as per the Global Adult Tobacco Survey,India,2009-2010 report, released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,Government of India,5.7 per cent adults addicted to tobacco only smoke cigarettes.Every year one million people die in India due to consumption of tobacco products.

We wish to bring to your notice that ITC produces more than 100 billion cigarettes annually and has a market share of over 70 per cent in India. As a company, more than half of ITCs net revenue comes from cigarettes, and Deveshwar heads this firm, Dr Chaturvedi added.

The ex-commissioner of Mumbai Custom and Excise,Deepak Kumar, lost his voice box to cancer.

Dr P C Gupta,Healis Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, said,His (Deveshwars ) brand is directly killing the people of the country. He has not played any significant role in creating health awareness in the country. Why has he been selected for the award With great effort he expressed his disappointment about the award,It is shocking and discouraging that the company, which is responsible for a million deaths in India,is being awarded by the government. This shows the governments seriousness in controlling the cancer.
