Dear NGO representatives,
On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June 2014, UNODC has launched a global awareness campaign under the slogan
"A message of hope: Drug use disorders are preventable and treatable”.
Within the background of the meaningful discussions held during the 57th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs High-Level Review (13-21 March 2014), this theme seeks to underline that (a) sustained success in the response to illicit drugs requires a balanced, cooperative, and integrated approach, that addresses both supply and demand reduction; (b) that a balanced approach includes measures focusing on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and social cohesion, and that (c) science plays a key role in this process. The campaign aims to show how UNODC is helping to bridge the gap between science and practice by facilitating the dialogue of policy makers with the scientific community.
You can find out more about this year's world drug campaign on the webpage dedicated to the campaign. The web page contains promotional material for teens, parents, and teachers, as well as radio series on different types of drugs and videos from previous world drug campaigns. Also, it will soon feature the messages of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNODC Executive Director, Mr. Yury Fedotov as well.
We encourage you to share this message with fellow NGOs working on drug-related issues and to keep us informed of activities you may wish to organise on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Thank you and kindregards,
