Reader's Digest has named Tulip Time the Best Small Town Festival in America, the festival organization announced Wednesday.
"They had done some prior research and there were well over 100 festivals they were reviewing," Tulip Time Director Tamra Bouman said.

Bouman said the festival's volunteerism and the community's support were key to Reader's Digest's decision.

"The immense amount of community support that has been so much a part of Tulip Time for 75 years, such as board involvement, Dutch dance, staff, operations and local talent is the mainstay of this festival," Bouman said. "This is a great honor and the Holland community should be proud."

A feature about Tulip Time's 75th Diamond Jubilee celebration is expected to appear in the May issue of Reader's Digest, which should hit newstands within the next week to 10 days. This year's festival will be held May 1-8.

"They wanted to know about Holland," Bouman said while describing the selection process the publication used. "And they wanted to know what we're doing special for the 75th anniversary."

Magazine officials were especially impressed with the more than 7,000 volunteers that help make the festival happen, Bouman said.
