      Course description:

      This course is aimed at bringing together people working in the field of
      Reintegration of Ex Combatants to share best practices and lessons learnt
      from reintegration experiences in different parts of the world. The course
      will build and enhance the skills and knowledge of participants so as to be
      able to improve the quality of the work of reintegration. It will support
      participants in assessing local realities and help to design, implement and
      coordinate tailored reintegration efforts more effectively, ensuring that
      future work measures up to IDDR standards.

      Course overview:

      1. Overview of DDR and its role in the peace process

      2. Disarmament and demobilisation

      3. Preparing for reintegration

      4. Socio-economic (re)integration: strategy and programme options

      5. The community perspective

      6. Psycho-social factors

      7. Special concerns (Child soldiers, people with disabilities, gender and

      8. DDR and related discussions (DDR and its linkages with SSR, Transitional
      Justice, etc)

      Training Methodology:

      This is a very practical and interactive course, focusing on the acquisition
      of relevant knowledge and skills using role plays, case studies, group work
      and simulations. Participants are expected to bring a wealth of skills and
      experience with them and to share these with the rest of the group as an
      integral part of the learning process.


      This is an assessed course leading to a certificate for successful
      completion. This certificate is awarded following an assessment of
      participants on their ability to operate as a reintegration specialist.


      The lead trainer, Irma Specht of Transition International, has 15 years of
      Reintegration experience throughout the world and works at policy, research,
      programming, training and implementation levels of Reintegration. Other
      trainers and resource people with experience of different conflict regions
      will be brought in for particular sessions to ensure a variety of approaches
      and perspectives.

      Criteria for Application:

      the following criteria have been established:

      ·         At least 5 years of experience working on DDR or other
      reintegration programmes;

      ·         Currently working on or in  a DDR or related processes in any

      ·         Some experience in management, policy or programme development;

      ·         Sufficient level of English to read, write and express themselves;

      Previous attendance of a DDR course is an asset
