Group Description

This group is dedicated to the life, career & works of Johnston McCulley (1883 – 1958), creator of "The Robin Hood of 1820's Spanish California", ZORRO (AKA "The Fox") !

Zorro made his very 1ST appearance in the weekly Pulp Magazine ALL-STORY WEEKLY - Aug. 9,1919 ; the first of a five part story, 'The Curse of Capistrano' (Aug. 9, Aug. 16, Aug. 23, Aug. 30 and Sept. 6, 1919). Although McCulley had by that time been working in the pulps since 1906 !!!

(Tarzan made his 1ST appearance in ALL-STORY MAGAZINE in 1912).

The year following the 1919 "The Curse Of Capistrano" story, in 1920 it was adapted for the silent theatrical film "The Mark Of Zorro," by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., who also starred in its' sequel, "Don Q, Son Of Zorro".

("The Curse of Capistrano" is now better know as "The Mark of Zorro" because of this).

This group's goal is to cover NOT ONLY Zorro books, memorabilia, television / films and products, BUT To Discuss the FULL Prolific Career of Johnston Arthur McCulley, for he wrote hundreds of fiction stories with OTHER Series Characters and non-series stories (under different pseudonyms).

These included characters such as The Crimson Clown, The Spider (1ST), The Black Star, The Thunderbolt, The Avenging Twins, The Man In Purple, The Mongoose, The Bat (1ST) , The Green Ghost (1ST), The Whirlwind, Don Vulture, Don Peon, and innumerable others ! His most prolific character was Thubway Tham, the lisping subway pickpocket.

Commentary on Mr. McCulley, and his vast Pulps career is very welcome !
