  • Last year I existed the trail from Muir Ranch. I reached Florence Lake store by 11:30AM. I waited for an hour near Jackass meadows campsite for hitch-hike. I did not see single vehicle. So I started walking towards Mono Hot Springs junction, hoping to catch some ride from there. I probably walked 2 miles before a camper from Ward lake picked me while returning from Florence Lake...

  • Interesting article. http://local.msn.com/drought-drawing-bears-near-people-at-lake-tahoe Reminds to be more diligent in keeping everything that attracts bears in bear can on the trail this year.

  • Well said. Had they extinct "naturally"; reintroducing them to same area does not seem logical (unless conditions changed from the time the species vanished). In this case, we pushed them to extinction. So reintroducing Grizzlies to Sierras is very good idea... -Swamy To: johnmuirtrail@^$1 From: johnmuirtrail@^$2 Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2014 13:31:17 -0700 Subject: [John Muir Trail] Re...

  • For backpacking, I use SIRUI T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with SIRUI G-10 29mm Ball head. Together they weigh 2.5lbs. DSLR with zoom lens (say, 24-105mm/f4) weigh about 4lbs. To carry such weight during long exposures, you need very stable platform. I found this tripod a good balance between weight(2.5lbs), price ($250) and its weight capacity (20lbs). -Swamy To...

  • I made pants using breathable cuben fiber ( and in the process of making jacket). It's same material that Zpack uses for rain jacket and pants. It's stretchy and seems not as tear resistive as CF used in tents. I'm not confident that it last longer than one JMT trip. Cost (including gear life) vs. weight does not make this worth, IMO. • I'm planning to carry Tortillas and PBJ for lunch on trail. But I see shelf life is not more than 2-3 weeks. I'm looking for tortillas with shelf life of about 5 weeks from the date I ship my resupply bucket (to last resupply point) to date I consume the last tortilla. Are there any brands with such long shelf time? -swamy
