  • The 11:00 AM time is for next day permits. Office opens at 7:30 Am to process same day Permits and confirmed reservations where the physical Permit has not yet been issued. All Permit Offices are linked by computer and phone. If you are coming in via 120 there is a Permit Office right inside the Gate. I always stop there if I want a same day. --- In johnmuirtrail@^$1, Josh Townsley...

  • Your gear looks fine. Really not much you can do there. I second John's suggestion of using time to try Trailrunners in lieu of Hiking Boots. See if it works for you. My wife used Vasque Velocity same as I do. But each person has a fav and it is trial and error. Best time to size them is after a long hike when your feet are a bit swollen. I swear by non-waterproof as they breath...

  • Best to camp at the Campground (Shady Rest) just as you enter Mammoth near the Ranger Station. Best place to park is at the Mammoth Inn. This is the designated place for parking. So basically you have two choices. Wake up in morning drive to Mammoth Inn and catch YARTS from there or set up your camp drive your car up to the inn and leave it the day before (there is a local shuttle...

  • I think the PCT record set by Anish is something. Personally I tend to avoid all the hype around records but if you look on her FB page she relates when she graduated from HS she weighed 200 lbs and was not athletic at all. So record aside it is an inspirational story and relates to the 'thread' can anyone do the JMT. https://www.facebook.com/AnishHikes --- In johnmuirtrail@^$1...

  • I take an unscientific approach to Trail Food. Maybe because I am lazy. The thing that is important to me is that I take food that I look forward to eating. It acts as an incentive. I also look at what I bring back home after a hike as I didn't savor this food and eliminate it from future trips as it was dead weight. For a thru hike my food selection varies slightly then if I were...

  • A few years ago when I needed a new stove/oven I did a lot of research. I ended up with a true convection which has a designated dehydrator setting. Love it. I can use sheet pans for my dehydration and works great. --- In johnmuirtrail@^$1, Jo T wrote: > > And I was all ready to start doing that when one of our group members posted a great jerky recipe (at home, jerky for less that...

  • I've had a lot of them. Most I have used as a trifecta. Raingear, shelter and packcover. Actually did the PCT with the Gatewood Cape and it worked fine till I got to WA. It worked well as a shelter if you were very careful. It was very easy to pull out a stake when you got up in the middle of the night (to pee). The problem I had in WA was putting it on as raingear after using it...

  • I guess I am a bit 'old school'. The Bear Ridge Trail is part of the JMT. It is a bit of 'ballbuster' but so what. I just do see why skipping it seems to be recommended option. --- In johnmuirtrail@^$1, "debrabrownbear" wrote: > > Thanks for the tip, Bob. We'll make sure the driver gets us to the right place. I definitely don't want to hike up the Bear Ridge trail. :-) > > Debra...

  • I actually use the JMT for training. Living fairly close by I just throw 9-10 days of food into a Bearcan drive to TM and p/u a Permit and start hiking. I have done it several times and am not necessarily committed to finishing but usually make it at least to Kearsarge. No resupply though I may p/u something at Red's to stretch my time. I'm 64 and after a Winter of moderate...
