  • It is a fast pace for this time of the year. Pack light and plan for some cold nights and days. If you are lucky and not get delayed by weather you can make it. Be prepared for adverse conditions and have alternate plans if conditions is not ideal for the rigorous pace. Good Luck. • It will be cold at night above 10K. We, my son and I, camped at Dusy Basin and Saphire Lake. It was cold with the wind blowing, especially at Saphire Lake. I recommend the 15 degree bag. • Babara, My son and I crossed the Evolution Valley stream at upstream location a few hundred yards from the trail. We did not have any trouble about a month ago in July. See picture attached and judge for yourself the depth of the water. He is 5'6" and enjoying the cool water. • Mammoth Mountain Inn has a parking lot for you to park. They will even hold on to your key if you do not want to carry your keys while you hike. I never hike with my car keys. It is dead weight to carry and I am always afraid to loose it on the trail. MMI will charge you a nominal fair amount to park there. • Carry more batteries with you and forget about the solar charger. It is not worth the additional weight. Charge your batteries at places with 110 volts outlet. The last location with 110 v outlets is at MTR and they will let you plug your charger in. I carried additional lithium ion batteries and they seem to last a while for me. Conserve your batteries by not viewing the pictures...

  • Hi All JMT'ers, We all who hiked and enjoyed the John Muir Trail at some point will run into a back country ranger at some point. Many of us has probably seek information from a ranger along the trail. If anyone of you happened to hike to McClure Ranger Station in Evolution Valley make a point to stop by to say thanks to Ranger Dave Gordon for his many years of service. I am sure...

  • Hi Brindusa, The High Sierra is a wonderful venue for preteens and teenagers to explore the outdoors. I have two boys now 12 and 14 yo. We have been hiking in the Sierra for 5 years now. Here is list of what we had done in the last 5 years. Year 1. Camp at Hodgdon Meadow campground. We used it as a basecamp and we day hikes to Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Soda Springs, Lambert Dome...

  • Hi David, It is always easier to access public transportation on the eastern side of the Sierra. I recommend exiting at Reds Meadow where one can catch the YARTS bus at Mammoth for the to return trip to YV. Exiting the trail at VVR is possible. However accessing public transit will be more difficult. Unless you have a car parked at VVR, you will have to either get a hike from a...
